Like Roma last year, another foreign-language film, Parasite, has received Best Picture nominations in both categories while the well-received Joker and 1917 garnered eleven and ten nominations, respectively. Scarlett Johansson, one of Hollywood’s busiest stars, appeared in both Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress categories while Al Pacino and Joe Pesci will duke it out for Best Supporting Actor in The Irishman.  There was the expected muttering after the apparent snubbing of Jennifer Lopez (Hustlers) and Robert DeNiro (The Irishman) but, in the main, there were few if any surprises in the list of contenders for the major academy awards.  One could not help but notice, as did nominations co-host Issa Rae, that once again, there is a lack of diversity in the acting and directing categories. The 2020 Oscar ceremony will apparently continue last year’s decision to go host-less which many felt made a for a shorter and better-paced broadcast. Could this be the year that four-time nominee Joaquin Phoenix finally picks up a golden statuette? Tune in to the ABC network on February 9, 2020 to find out.
