SUMMARY

Warriors in a pot-apocalyptic Texas band together to battle a fascist regime trying to rule all of humanity's survivors.

Estimated reading time: 7 minutes

2020 Texas Gladiators is a 1983 Italian film from directors Joe D’Amato and George Eastman. One of a number of Mad Max knockoffs, the film is set in a post-apocalyptic Texas where, in the aftermath of a nuclear war that has led to the breakdown of society and the wipeout of nearly all technology, a band of warriors on motorcycles and ATV’s fight against the rise of a fascist regime that has gained the upper hand by developing advanced technology like laser guns and forcefield shields.

2020 Texas Gladiators is pure grindhouse insanity from the very opening scenes. It is shootouts, naked women, and bands of sweaty men doing violence and rape, so much rape. Some of the edits in the film don’t make much sense and are obviously done just for fan service. There is one scene where the beautiful, long-legged blonde actress Sabrina Siani is covered in dust and dirt from one of the numerous battles in the rocky desert and then the next scene, they are walking through a forest, Sabrina’s skin glistening, obviously rubbed down with baby oil or something – no Diddy comments, please. I mean, what can you expect from the sort of film that gives you such well thought out dialogue as “The man who kills a killer is a killer.”? Don’t think too long on it, this is for genre fans who love a good bad flick.

The Video

2020 Texas Gladiators was scanned in 4K from the original negative and presented on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in a 1.85:1 HGEVC 2160p (4K UHD) HDR10 encodement. It has a MaxLL of 1000 nits and MaxFALL of 400 nits.  There is not much added to the image from the HDR grading in so far as highlights and colors do not pop much, but they still look satisfying. There are some issues with the color stability, where in some scenes you can see flesh tones in particular wavering from more reddish to flatter, more natural tones. The grain structure is natural, but there are some scratches and sparkle that can be seen throughout the film.

The Audio

2020 Texas Gladiators comes with the original Italian mono and English mono dub in DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. Neither mix sounds great, but the English mix sounds a little cleaner and the Italian mix sounds harsher with more clipping.
