Like the two pre-pandemic Oscar ceremonies that Jimmy Kimmel had hosted, the 95th Academy Awards program ran overtime. Ostensibly in jest, he did warn the audience in advance that because the show followed the start of daylight savings time, an hour would be added to the show. Host Kimmel also took his customary potshots at many of the celebs in the audience—particularly Steven Spielberg whose The Fabelmans, nominated for 7 awards, came away empty-handed, as did Oscar Best Film nominees, The Banshees of Inisherin and Elvis.
As expected, Everything Everywhere All at Once was the big winner, garnering 7 golden statuettes and sweeping all the major awards except for a surprising Oscar that went o Brendan Fraser’s “comeback” performance as a morbidly obese English teacher. All Quiet on the Western Front took home 4 awards while big budget films like Black Panther, Avatar and Top Gun each received only one Oscar. Guillermo del Toro’s completely reimagined Pinocchio gave evidence that he is just as comfortable in the world of animation as he is in the conventional film world.
Unlike last year, there were no violent outbursts from any of the stars in attendance. Among the highlights were performances by Rihanna and Lady Gaga although neither of their songs was an Oscar winner. Most of the thank you speeches were mercifully brief, the most heartfelt being those delivered by former Vietnamese refugee and child film star Ke Huy Quan (Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom) and Jamie Lee Curtis who received the very first Academy Award in her long and distinguished film career. Now, if ABC could only make Jimmy Kimmel keep an eye on the clock if he returns as an Oscars’ host!
