The Film
[Rating:4/5]
21 Jump Street tells the story of Schmidt (Jonah Hill; Moneyball; How to Train Your Dragon) and Jenko (Channing Tatum; Haywire; The Son of No One), two people from opposite sides of the popularity realm. In high school, Schmidt was the ‘Real Slim Shady’ wannabe, while Jenko was the tough, popular jock. Flash forward seven years, and both are now partners for the Metro City Police Department. After an outbreak of a new drug, the two go undercover — as high school students. Their job is to infiltrate the suppliers, find out who the dealers are, and ultimately take down the drug ring. Along the way, both will learn new things about each other, making them realize their past errors. What results is an often very funny film, thanks in part to the natural chemistry Hill and Tatum have together.
From the opening box office weekend, to the moment I popped this Blu-ray in for review, I had heard nothing but positive remarks for the remade 21 Jump Street. Fans of varying ages hailed the film as downright funny, often times gut wrenching. While the gut wrenching comment isn’t necessarily true, I’ll definitely agree that all involved have given the original series justice. Yes, the remake isn’t an exact clone of the series, but that doesn’t matter. What does is that, like the Johnny Depp helmed television show, this version has the same laughs, the same heart, the same soul that made Depp a star. Like the 80s had Depp, this new one has Tatum and Hill.
Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill work well in tandem, delivering quick, witty dialogue in the kind of manner that almost makes it seem real. Almost like we’re watching two friends chat, or fight, not watching a movie. The two have great chemistry, easily delivering many laughs either at the expense of one another, society, or someone else in the film. 21 Jump Street, simply put, is a well-paced, highly enjoyable comedy that anyone can really enjoy. Whether younger, middle-aged, or even older, there’s something for all ages to like.

The film’s 2:40:1 framed, AVC MPEG-4 encoded transfer is nearly perfect with only one slight issue. Shot using the Arri Alexa/Arriflex 435 Camera, 21 Jump Street has a very consistent, film-like looking image. The color palette, while typically on the darker side of the spectrum, features a good amount of detail. Your opening moments showcase the greens of the grass, the blues of the sky, and the yellows of the sun. Forward to a darker sequence, like that of the Captain’s office, and you have the issue with this transfer. Darker scenes tend to look rather dim, resulting in a slight loss of detail. Nothing overly bad, or cringe worthy. Numerous close-ups on the faces of Schmidt and Jenko result in accurate contrast flesh tones. This isn’t the normal ‘demo-worthy’ title from Sony; however, it still is the kind of transfer that will please nearly everyone.

[Rating:4.5/5]
Sporting a mix of comedy and action, 21 Jump Street arrives with a solid DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track. Dialogue, while typically witty and fast paced, is well reproduced throughout with no instance of drop out. Atmosphere, particularly during the freeway/party sequences, is great. Discrete effects like that of background music/character dialogue/gun shots help to add to the mix. LFE, with the modern Top 40-ish music, adds in solid low-end. Whether quieter moments like that of Doug chatting on the phone with Molly or the high octane scenes, the mix handles everything quite well. Truly, this is an all-around well mixed output from Sony.

The Definitive Word
Overall:
[Rating:4/5]
This remake of 21 Jump Street succeeds solely due to the chemistry of Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum. The two have a natural look and feel to them. Sony’s Blu-ray is equally as good, with both a solid V/A presentation, as well as a few, nice features. Recommended for everyone.
