Here is Walt Disney’s animated interpretation of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. The story, incorporating some minor elements from Alice Through the Looking Glass, is a classic that just about everyone knows. The young Alice, bored with her mundane daily routine falls asleep and dreams of falling down a rabbit hole into a fantasy world where everything is mixed up, and topsy turvy.
Filled with a slew of memorable characters like the Mad Hatter, the Cheshire Cat, the perpetually late White Rabbit, Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, and, of course, the Queen of Hearts and her army of playing cards, Alice in Wonderland is a colorful and fantastical production with typically grand animation from Disney and fun songs.
The story challenges the need for order and authority and the need to grow up. Musically speaking, it is not one of Disney’s strongest productions, but from a character perspective, Alice in Wonderland has yielded one of their longest-lasting set of characters and images, infiltrating the popular psyche for years. It is also a film that improves with multiple viewings.

At this point it’s almost redundant to say that Disney’s latest animated Blu-ray release looks superb. These folks know how to do animation on Blu-ray and Alice in Wonderland’s AVC/MPEG-4 1080p encoding is yet another reference quality release. The colors are vibrant, the image is clean and detailed, and compression or processing issues aren’t an issue. This release just sparkles.
Audio Quality

Disney has provided the sound restored in a Dolby Digital 2.0 encoding and a brand-new DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless mix. Both sound rather good. The restored 2.0 soundtrack is a bit more forward with less dynamic range, but the dialogue is bit clearer in the mix. The 5.1 mix expands the soundstage, giving the sound a lot more breath, but the dialogue is sometimes buried slightly in the mix.
