“Kansas”
**Spoiler Alert**
Blurring the line once more between good and evil, this week’s episode of Once Upon a Time reveals it’s all about choices. We all have to decide what type of person we want to be, and we make that choice with every decision going forward. Regardless of your past it’s up to you to choose who you want to be now and that is exactly what Regina did.
Bolstered with courage from her loved ones, Regina was able to tap into something she never knew existed within her – light magic. It was as much a surprise to her as everyone else. It was her son’s belief in her that made it all possible. Henry is her one true love, though I suspect Robin Hood may be a close second. Belief is a powerful magic, never overlooked in Storybrooke (perhaps we should take note). Regina’s status as hero is cemented when she decides to let her enemy live, because isn’t that what heroes do?
Snow White’s baby has arrived- it’s a boy! Hold off on the celebratory champagne until the end. This baby has a bumpy ride ahead. The Wicked Witch makes off with him and in his first few hours of life he becomes a human sacrifice. Luckily the writers of OUAT are just teasing, they don’t really want to sacrifice innocent little babies. And as such the tiny human is eventually rescued from his awful fate. Whew! This might be a baby Snow and Charming actually get to raise. If that’s the case they have a lot of sleepless nights ahead.
Through flashbacks we uncover more of Zelena’s wicked past. She too had a choice. She was given an opportunity to join a sisterhood of witches and watch over the Land of Oz. They met and ruled from a special table in the Enchanted Forrest. Each witch represented a corner, North, South, East and Zelena was given West. I know it’s a family show, but I couldn’t help noticing that these witches could have easily gained admission to the Playboy Mansion Halloween party. They all had big hair, beautiful gowns and impeccably made up faces.
Things were going well, Zelena’s envy faded away and with that her green complexion. Zelena seemed to be a changed person full of light and compassion once she plugged into her new sisterhood. That all changed when Dorothy arrived. The sister witches showered Dorothy with affection and it wasn’t long before Zelena’s envy came creeping back. I was thrilled to see the writers work a “melting” scene into the script. Water wasn’t able to kill Zelena, but it did make for a visually stimulating scene. It was everything I hoped it would be and more.
Zelena blew her opportunity to be a better person. She chose to be wicked and seems to revel in it. Regina is all too familiar with squandered opportunities and takes the high road, realizing that if she’d gotten her evil way so long ago she’d never have Henry. Foiled plans can be a blessing and now that Regina realizes that she wants to grant Zelena the same kindness Snow White gave to her so long ago.
While Regina has turned benevolent, Rumple has not. The way he sees it, Zelena killed his son. He won’t be forgiving or forgetting anytime soon. Locked in a jail cell without her magic, Zelena’s a sitting duck. Rumple’s no hero, though more often on the side of good these days, Rumple still kills like a villain.
Not sure anyone in Storybrooke is going to miss Zelena though it looks like her death has set something spooky in motion. We’ll have to wait for the two hour season finale next week to find out what it is. I hope whatever it is doesn’t ruin what I suspect is the beginning of an Emma/Hook hook-up. I’ve been waiting for those two to get together for quite some time!
