“Think Lovely Thoughts”
*Spoiler Alert*
Though it played out differently in terms of the reveal, there was a Star Wars-like moment in last night’s “Think Lovely Thoughts“, you know that jaw dropping moment when the audience learns Darth Vadar is really Luke Skywalker’s father. Once Upon a Time employed a cleverly similar scene, however the shock was intended for the audience and not the character who was already in on it.
Oh, the tangled webs we weave. There are some parents in this world who have higher priorities than their children and Rumpelstiltskin’s father was one of them. He was a self-centered man who cared more about himself than the love and trust young Rumple childishly placed in him. Rumple is already one of the more fascinating characters on the show and this episode continues to cement that. Through a series of flashbacks Rumple’s past is brought into focus revealing his traumatizing relationship to Peter Pan.
Rumple tried desperately to be a better man than his father, yet made very similar mistakes with his own son. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Now he’s trying heroically to save Henry so he can prove his love and his change of heart to the son he regrets leaving behind. Unlike his own father, not a day went by that Rumple didn’t regret the choices he made. He’s already a better man, but it’s hard for others to look past his image as the “Dark One.” Too bad his plan failed. Pandora’s Box didn’t work out the way he’d intended it to. Hope he’s not gone for long. This show wouldn’t be the same without his spunky character.
Up until this point Henry was a sharp eyed, clever little guy, but since he’s been stuck in Neverland his wit just isn’t up to par. Why Henry has blindly placed his trust in Peter Pan is unclear. Perhaps Henry has forgotten it was also Pan who kidnapped him? Oh Henry you were once so smart, what happened?! He is the fourth generation son in a long line of lousy fathers, his examples in life have been strong women not men. This alone should inspire him to trust the woman in his family more than the evil Pan. I miss the old Henry, this dunce in his place is boring.
Henry paid the price of a bumbling hero. His heart was in the right place, but his logic was lacking. This could be the last of him, though I cannot imagine the writers would kill him off like that. As Snow and Charming might say bursting with good will, “there’s always a way.” Along with developing her magic skills, Emma has also taken on her parents’ cheery beliefs that things always work out. Very unlike the Emma we were first introduced to. As such, I’m curious to see where these new developments will lead Emma later in this season.
Overall a fantastic episode with many surprises. If you’re a fan of Rumple this is an episode not to be missed.
