The Film
[Rating:2/5]
This original ABC Family made-for-TV movie stars a Hillary Duff, still in full-on “Lizzy Maguire” mode, as freelance fashion writer Lane, desperate to find love. When Lane pitches a story to Cosmopolitan magazine that they want to publish, she goes undercover in the business world looking to find her “magic man” that meets all the criteria on her 10-item check list. Of course, once undercover, Lane begins to realize that she may find love in unexpected places, or even with someone who doesn’t match her check list.
The film is a tame blending of The Devil Wears Prada, Legally Blonde, and Confessions of a Shopaholic. It has all the superficial style of a big screen rom-com, but lacks any of the deftness and skill of the better films of the genre. It merely hits all the cliches and bundles them up in a neat, Disney-fied package.
The film also lacks any real chemistry between the two leads. Duff and Michael McMillian, as her boss and potential love-match Tom, lack any believability as a romantic coupling. I guess, in the grand scheme of things, one couldn’t except much more from a made-for-TV romantic comedy starring one of Disney’s biggest stars.

Beauty and the Briefcase was originally produced in 1080p high definition and it has been transferred to Blu-ray in an AVC/MPEG-4 encoding. The image is bright and clean with strong detail and rich, vivid colors.
Audio Quality
[Rating:3/5]
There is a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless soundtrack provided that is lackluster at best. Sound in the surround channels in minimal and dialogue has some slight clipping. Otherwise, it sounds about like what one would expect from a television production of this sort of film.

The Definitive Word
Overall:
[Rating:2.5/5]
Beauty and the Briefcase looks great on Blu-ray, but as far as rom-coms go, there are far funnier and more romantic ones out there.
