The Film

[Rating:4/5]

This family-friendly feature-length film with the famous zany battling duo of the frisky feline Tom and his perennial nemesis, the clever mouse Jerry, is everything you could expect from a Tom and Jerry movie. With a twist on the classic tale of Robin Hood, Tom and Jerry find themselves battling it out on opposite sides of the fight between Robin Hood and the Sheriff of Nottingham, as Tom plays Squire to the hostage Maid Marian and Jerry messenger for Robin Hood. But the duo will become unlikely allies when Tom discovers Prince John’s plan to hurt Marian along with King Richard and Robin. Calling a truce, the two furry rivals have to risk it all to save their human friends and all the kingdom.

It doesn’t get much more fun, action-filled, or satisfying than this for Tom and Jerry fans. All the classic characters are here, all the antics are preserved, and nothing is too risqué or frightful for the little ones either. They even manage to mix in a musical number.

Video Quality

[Rating:5/5]

Robin Hood and His Merry Mouse has all the clarity of a digitally animated feature with no video noise, aliasing, or compression issues in sight. The colors are splendidly vivid, fills have little to no banding, and the line art is crisp.

Audio Quality

[Rating:4/5]

The lossless English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack is full and ambient with lots of stereo activity across the front and the occasional discrete sound panned to the surrounds. There are good dynamics with solid low frequencies, but nothing earth shaking.

Supplemental Materials

[Rating:3.5/5]

  • The Two Mouseketeers (1.33:1; SD; 00:07:23)

The Definitive Word

Overall:

[Rating:4/5]

I wasted many hours watching Tom and Jerry reruns after school when I was kid on the local TV station and while these new features will never truly capture the essence of those classic shorts for me, Robin Hood and His Merry Mouse is very effective at evoking those old cartoons. I’m confident that young and old alike couldn’t possibly find much to complain about with this film.
