Buscando Alma (2024): Award-Winning Short Film Review

REVIEW OVERVIEW

The Film

SUMMARY

A woman who hasn't seen her mother in two decades after a devastating separation is confronted with feelings of uncertainty upon the potential of a reunion.

Buscando Alma is a short film directed by Melissa Fisher (Short film — Two Funerals and a Freezer) and written by Fisher with Mair Flores (Scared to Death). It revolves around a transgender woman reuniting with her mother after two decades of separation.

Christina Ferdo (Carolina Gutierrez, TV’s The L Word Generation Q) is a transgender woman working as a nurse in a hospital. One day she receives a call from her lawyer that her lost Honduran mother was finally found in Highland Park. In dreamy flashbacks we see Christina as the young “Cristian” before her transition together with her mother Alma (Neher Jacqueline Briceño). Cristina was abducted by some mysterious men for an illegal adoption and never saw her mother again. It is implied that Cristina was searching for her mother for many years. At the same time she is intimidated by the probability of being rejected by her mother, especially now that she has transitioned. Meanwhile Alma is seen working at a laundry center and praying for her child to be alive and return to her…

Buscando Alma is a well directed short film with enchanting cinematography from Boa Simon. It briefly explores themes like transitioning, gender identity, and the intimate bond between mother and child. It also examines the nature of emotions like sorrow, longing and the fear of rejection. It is a moving film with heartfelt performances from Carolina Gutierrez as the protagonist, and Neher Jacqueline Briceño in the role of the mother, Alma. It is definitely worth watching!
