SUMMARY

Selina Kyle, the Catwoman, finds herself pursued by Batwoman, INTERPOL, and the international crime syndicate Leviathan after she carries out a jewel heist for a priceless gem in this anime-style DC Universe Original Animated Movie directed by Shinsuke Terasawa.

Catwoman: Hunted is another DC Universe Animated Original Movie that, like Batman Ninja, was produced in an anime style. Directed by Shinsuke Terasawa, the film follows the sexy femme fatale and supervillain Catwoman/Selina Kyle as she tries to steal a priceless jewel, which puts her in the crosshairs of the dangerous global criminal organization Leviathan, Interpol, and Batwoman. Catwoman faces some of her most dangerous battles as an entire rogue’s gallery of villains come after her including Barbara Minerva and Solomon Grundy.

The anime style for Catwoman: Hunted works brilliantly for this film and the character of Selina Kyle, whose voice is nailed by Elizabeth Gillies with absolute perfection. Terasawa brings an excellent balance of maturity and good time fun to this feature while the jazz-inspired score evokes both a film noir crime drama and an anime classic like Cowboy Bebop.

The Video

Catwoman: Hunted comes in a 1.78:1 HEVC 2160p (4K UHD) HDR10 encodement on 4K Ultra HD. It has a MaxLL of 533 nits and a MaxFALL of 258 nits. I find these Warner Bros. DC Universe animated films on 4K can be a bit hit or miss, but this one definitely lands on the mark. The HDR10’s wide color gamut adds some nice vibrancy to the animation’s color palette and the specular highlights have good ‘pop’ as far as animation goes for fills in such things as lights, flashes, and explosions. The included Blu-ray is also no slouch and can almost go toe-to-toe, with a little less color gradience and lower contrast definition, but marginally so.

The Audio

As is usually the case with the mixes for these DC features, the English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track is a showcase with aggressive mixing of solid sound effects through the surround channels, wide dynamic range, extended and robust low end, and clear dialogue. The only thing missing are the height channels of an Atmos or DTS:X mix, but this does up-mix well to Neural X.

The Supplements

Catwoman: Hunted comes with a Blu-ray of the feature included and a Movies Anywhere digital code

Special Features on Blu-ray:

  • When the Hunter Becomes the Hunted (1080p; 00:18:57)
  • Catwoman: The Feline Femme Fatale (1080p; 00:39:52) – An overview of the character of Catwoman from the comics to film and television with interviews from the actresses who have played her to writers who have written her.

The Final Assessment

An excellent DC Universe Animated Original from the Batman universe, proving Catwoman is a compelling character who maybe deserves a series of her own and a well-done live action franchise of her own. Highly recommended.
