The Film

In the town of Oakey Oaks, Chicken Little (voiced by Zach Braff) declares that the sky is falling. His evidence? An object shaped exactly like a stop sign fell from the sky, hitting him on his head. Unable to find the piece, Chicken Little’s father Buck Cluck tells everyone that the piece was probably an acorn from a nearby tree. After misleading the town, Chicken Little is labeled a laughing stock. Flashing forward a year, nothing has changed. Walking around any corner results in pointing and laughing for Chicken Little. But just when he feels that the town may laugh at him forever, something occurs that may prove his previous ‘sky is falling’ true. It’s now up to Chicken Little to save his town with the help of his friends Abby Mallard, Runt of the Litter and Fish out of Water of course. What results is an enjoyable film, one that I’m sure kids will love.
While Chicken Little isn’t the kind of film I’ll watch repeatedly, I did find the film entertaining mainly due to all of the cultural references. Whether it be the opening Lion King montage, the Indiana Jones parody or the bright, bubbly soundtrack, the film seems to know and understand what its audience is all about. Nothing openly cries watch me again, but for what it’s worth Chicken Little does warrant at least one viewing.

Chicken Little arrives with the same 1080p, AVC MPEG-4 transfer that blessed its previous Blu-ray release. The transfer itself is a complete stunner. Like all animated affairs, Chicken Little benefits from being digitally created. This allows the film’s colors, like blues, oranges and whites, to be quite lush and vibrant throughout. Detail is splendid as well, whether in close-up moments or in backgrounds. One of my favorite aspects of animation on Blu-ray is the sheer ability to pause any sequence, any moment and simply marvel at what’s in front of us. An image of true detail, true brilliance. Reference quality all the way folks.
While I have nothing but accolade after accolade about the disc’s 2D presentation, I can’t say the same about the film’s 3D presentation. Colors are still as vibrant as ever, detail remains impressive and contrast levels are accurate. While this may all sound good, why am I disappointed, you ask? The problem at hand revolves around ghosting. For those new to the 3D game, ghosting essentially is when the left eye image is not completely blocked from the right eye or vice versa; this results in crosstalk, or “ghosting,” a slight shadow image of the object. Now perhaps this is my display (for note I have a Sony KDLNX720 55″ LED), as I highly doubt the problem lies with the source. Perhaps more with the 3D encodement? Whatever the reason may be, I couldn’t help but be annoyed by this especially when I found the other 3 Disney Blu-ray 3D releases for November 8th, 2011 to be impressive.
Audio Quality

Luckily the film’s PCM 5.1 track (2D) and new DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 (3D) fares better than the aforementioned video. Dialogue is mostly well reproduced, albeit somewhat low at points. I did have to raise the volume a bit, but nothing minus a few moments. LFE offers up some impressive bass, especially in some of the parody moments. Not as deep and booming as some might expect but certainly nice. The varying musical moments, whether the score or different selections, all sounded great. Atmosphere is mostly full offering up solid 360-degree activity, but, not as much I had initially expected. Do note the audio on Chicken Little isn’t “bad” per se, more that I’ve been floored by other releases like Bolt and Meet the Robinsons that I just wanted more.

While the film is enjoyable, I can’t help but be disappointed by this 3D presentation of Chicken Little. While no one may ever know why this transfer fails, the 2D presentation is quite strong. I suggest fans of the film give this one a rental to see if the problems within annoy them.
