The Series

[Rating:4/5]

From the CLAMP Manga group comes this sweetly romantic, well-animated, and perfectly crafted piece of anime. Chobits follows the story of eighteen-year-old Hideki, a rural teen who comes to the big city of Tokyo to attend college prep-school in order to get into a college of his choice. He finds a modern city teeming with persocoms – humanoid androids that are pretty, technologically advanced, and nearly perfect in every way. But Hideki can’t afford the pricey gadgets of his dreams. As luck would have it, he stumbles across one thrown away in the trash. When he takes her home and turns her on, all she can say is “chi.” She’s strange, but unbearably cute. She also seems to be an unusual persocom; she’s been custom made and is more powerful than any persocom any of Hideki’s friends has ever come across. She is also seems capable of moving without an operating system, leading to the belief that she could be one of the mythological “Chobits,” an urban legend on the internet of powerful persocoms. It now falls to the technologically inept Hideki to teach Chi everything, using only the basic learning program that seems to be installed in her system. Along the way, he develops deep feelings for her, and she becomes very attached to him as well. But as Chi develops, there is a dark secret within her about her past that slowly comes into focus – what could it be?

Like Ghost in the Shell and other anime, Chobits explores the complex relationship between humans and technology while pondering the meaning of love and sentience. It is beautifully animated, has strong character development, and is sugary sweet from start to finish.

Video Quality

[Rating:3/5]

Chobits is a 1080i/60 upscaled transfer from a standard definition source, so regardless of how creative the animation of this series is, it doesn’t stand out well at all in this AVC transfer from Funimation. The image is very soft, lacking detail in the line art, and color reproduction seems veiled. There are also some instances of stair-stepping and combing artifacts that can be seen.

Audio Quality

[Rating:4/5]

Japanese and English lossless Dolby TrueHD 2.0 mixes are provided. Both are quite similar, offering clean dialogue, a punchy midrange with a plethora of sound effects and somewhat wide stereo imaging.
