The Film

[Rating:3.5/5]

Colin Quinn: Long Story Short was directed by the legendary Jerry Seinfeld and features former SNL news anchor Colin Quinn doing what he knows best, that being providing witty, informative and, at times, downright hilarious opinions on varying parts of life. This time, for Long Story Short, Quinn brings his style of comedy to Broadway for an HBO production delivering us the history of the world. Ranging from the early Greeks, English, French, all the way to the modern times of the Snooki world, Quinn leaves no stone unturned.

I’ll come right out and admit that I’ve never really watched anything Quinn has done. Even though I’m not the biggest fan of Seinfeld and the dry humor the show offers, I was curious to see what Quinn might have to say about the history of the world. While not as funny as other comedians like Lewis Black (topical wise), I still found myself enjoying what Quinn had to say. In particular, his mocking of Snooki and her lamenting that the loss of her cell phone is a huge deal and his ‘teaching’ skit (‘Man, that Copernicus was a badass) are the real stand-outs. The show has a smooth, simple flow to it, something that most can find enjoyment in.

Video Quality

[Rating:4/5]

The 1:78:1 framed, AVC/MPEG-4 encoded transfer is fairly solid. The show’s color palette doesn’t offer up a wide range of colors minus your purples and blues of Quinn’s outfit and the blacks of the stage. I will say that, despite this lack of colors, the provided colors do pop occasionally. Detail is impressive at times, in particular those closeups of Quinn. Flesh tones are accurate as the contrast levels. Blacks are impressive as well, as there’s no instance of crush. Grain is minimal as the film’s print is in fine condition. All in all, this is a good effort from MVD Visual.

Audio Quality

[Rating:3.5/5]

The show’s PCM 2.0 does what it needs to do. Dialogue, being ever so important here, is well reproduced with no instance of drop out. The show is very front heavy rarely opening up the sound field, outside of audience claps and laughs. As Quinn travels between eras, there are little musical cues that accompany a graphic on screen. These cues do sound fine and, at the bare minimum, do provide a bit of atmosphere to an otherwise dialogue-driven performance. All in all this is a standard comedic performance effort, one that does just fine.

The Definitive Word

Overall:

[Rating:1.5/5]

Colin Quinn’s unique sense of humor arrives on Blu-ray courtesy of MVD Visual. The Blu-ray features fine video and good audio as well as many laughs courtesy of Quinn. Give this one a look if you’re in the mood to laugh because, after all, who doesn’t like to laugh?
