SUMMARY

A videographer answers an ad to document a dying man's last messages to his unborn child, but the client's unhinged behavior has him questioning his safety.

Estimated reading time: 5 minutes

Creep is a found footage psychological horror film directed by Patrick Brice, who also stars in the film, and co-written and starring Mark Duplass. The film centers around a videographer, Aaron (Brice) hired by an eccentric client Josef (Duplass) to videotape his every moment at a secluded cabin. When Aaron arrives, Josef informs him he is dying and that is why he hired Aaron. He wants to document his last moments as a record for his unborn child. Immediately, the atmosphere is strange between the two as Josef is uncanny and acts weirdly familiar with Aaron even though they just met. It only goes from strange to worse, and possibly violent.

The found footage genre is pushed to the limits of believability with Creep. On the one hand, the setup of a videographer hired to document the final days of a dying man talking to his unborn child makes sense, but as the situation becomes more untenable, and possibly dangerous, one questions why the guy would not make a run for it.

Even in the low budget, non-CGI look, Brice and Duplass do manage to make Creep true to its name, with dark, dimly lit scenes, and very unhinged performances from Duplass, who comes across more psychopathic than man with one foot in the grave. He carries the film, which required many reshoots of many of the scenes with differing scenarios and setups, and various alternate endings to be completed.

The Video

Creep is not a film that is ever going to look great, but the 1.78:1 AVC 1080p transfer from Second Sight Films on Blu-ray is competent, with no added compression artifacts layered on top of the video noise, white level clipping, and soft details inherent in the source.

The Audio

The stereo mix for Creep comes in LPCM 2.0 on this Blu-ray release from Second Sight. In keeping with the aesthetic of the film the audio sounds similar to what one would expect from a handheld camera recording, but with a little more professional tweaking. The dialogue is clear, and the room ambience has been reined in with dynamic range being wide enough to provide ample jump scares.
