Dexter: The Seventh Season finds Dexter (Michael C. Hall) returning as the Miami forensics expert with blood on his hands once more. Only this time, he’s finally forced to come clean to his sister, Deb (Jennifer Carpenter), about his deadly ways. Now, obviously Deb is unsure how to exactly handle this. Should she treat her brother as a criminal or as an addict? To make matters worse, Dexter now finds himself entangled with a new group of killers in Isaak Sirko (Ray Stevenson) and Hannah (Yvonne Strahovski), the latter whom he is attracted to. Dexter must now figure out how to balance his secret identity, all while also balancing his family life. What results is a series that, despite stumbling a bit in the previous Sixth Season, has returned to the form we’ve all come to know it for.

While Season Six suffered from a total lack of cohesion from episode to episode (the plot really seemed to be all over the place, resulting in the audience becoming disinterested,) series’ creators must have heard the cries of the Dexter faithful, as this Seventh Season is one of the best yet. Without going into too much spoiler detail, I will say that the inclusion of more people knowing about Dexter’s secret identity only helps to strengthen the season. As Dexter struggles to hide this identity, there’s a sense of tension from episode to episode (something missing from the Sixth Season.) In fact, I’ll admit that I wrote this series off as I didn’t even tune into the first episode of this Seventh Season. Luckily though, based on the recommendation to watch the first episode of this season by a friend, I started to watch again. Boy, was THAT a great decision, as the real strength here lies in the fact that we wonder what is going to happen next, are never bored, and can’t wait to watch the next episode. That, simply put folks, is what excellent television series are all about.

Dexter, in its Seventh Season, arrives with a 1:78:1 framed, AVC MPEG-4 encoded transfer. Faithful to its original HD broadcast, colors are vibrant, offering up a consistent looking image. While brighter moments may dominate, darker sequences have no real issues, also maintains accurate color levels. Contrast levels are spot on, as is the series’ source with no notice of print damage. All in all, this is a solid presentation that fans will be pleased with.

Audio-wise, Dexter arrives with a Dolby TrueHD 5.1 mix, one of which is solid like the aforementioned video presentation. Dialogue is well reproduced via the center channel, with no instance of drop out. Atmosphere envelopes the room at times, giving a solid sense of directional effects (background dialogue, gruesome knife slashes.) LFE also shows up with a bit of low-end, but not as much as we might expect. Akin to the video, this lossless effort is solid.

Despite a lackluster Sixth Season, Showtime’s Dexter is back stronger than ever in this Seventh Season. Equally strong is CBS’s technical effort on this Blu-ray with a faithful V/A presentation. Even though no substantial features have been included (despite their presence on the DVD edition,) fans will still want to scoop this Seventh Season up.
