The Film

[Rating:3.5/5]

Based on the second of Jeff Kinney’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid books of the same name, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules is the second film adaptation of the series. These family-friendly, kid-friendly films geared mainly toward middle school boys are pure good time, goodhearted family entertainment.

Rodrick Rules isn’t quite as enjoyable as the unexpected hit that was the first film, but it is still a pleasant little film to sit through. This film reintroduces audiences to the Heffley family, Greg (Zachary Gordon) Heffley and his best friend Rowley (Robert Capron). Back from summer vacation, the two undersized middle schoolers are now heading into the 7th grade and still trying to make their way through school without being labelled losers. Complicating matters for Greg is his mother’s plan to get him and his older brother Rodrick (Devon Bostick) to bond. Fireworks between the two sibling rivals necessarily ensue, as Rodrick makes life absolutely miserable for Greg, even embarrassing him in front of the girl of his dreams – new girl in school Holly Hills (Peyton List).

Rodrick Rules is replete with little life lessons that parents will just eat up, but there’s enough mischief and fun here that most kids will see right past that and just be amused by the slapstick humor.

Video Quality

[Rating:4.5/5]

Although there is some occasional softness inherent in the source, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules is generally a strong transfer from 20th Century Fox. The 1080p AVC encodement shows a fine grain structure and sharp detail that picks up minute details extending well into the background. Color reproduction is strong with vibrant primary colors and deep blacks.

Audio Quality

[Rating:4.5/5]

While the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack could hardly be considered aggressive, there is a tremendous amount of atmospherics in the surround channels, a wide dynamic range, and spacious stereo imaging across the front. Dialogue is clean and natural with no crackle.

Supplemental Materials

[Rating:4/5]

Rodrick Rules is packed with extras that the kids will love, especially all the new “Summer Vacation” shorts featuring the Wimpy Kid characters and the Gag Reel. The inclusion of an audio commentary is a bit perplexing on a title like this, but for the more cerebral youths out there and for the few adults who may be interested, there is one included.

The supplements provided with this release are:

  • Audio Commentary by Director David Bowers and Author Jeff Kinney
  • My Summer Vacation:
    • “Summer Jobs are Ruff!” by George Heffley
    • “My Zoo-Wee Vacation!” by Rowley Jefferson
    • “My Magick Summer” by George Heffley
    • “My Summer Romance” by Fregley
    • “Water and All that Jazz” by Greg Heffley
    • “Bet it, Bully” by Chirag Gupta
    • “Heaven on Wheels” by Patty Farrell
  • Deleted Scenes with Optional Commentary by Director David Bowers
  • Alternate Ending – Stealthinator
  • Gag Reel
  • Theatrical Trailer
  • Digital Copy
  • DVD
  • Live Extras:
    • Exclusive: Plainview’s Most Talented

The Definitive Word

Overall:

[Rating:4/5]

It’s not high art, but Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules is a fine family-friendly film that parents won’t have to be too worried allowing their middle-school aged kids to watch. Couple that with the hefty amount of extras and this is a worthy release to add to the collection.
