Dinosaurs: Giants of Patagonia 3D is another film originally intended for exhibition in IMAX theatres. With narration from veteran actor Donald Sutherland, the forty-minute long documentary focuses on the history of Dinosaurs in South America, mainly Argentina’s Patagonia, where the world’s largest creatures roamed the Earth. The film uses CGI-generated imagery to portray such huge dinosaurs as Argintinosaurus and Gigantosaurus in what was their natural habitat, through to the time of their extinction. Enhances the fun level, for sure, but this certainly isn’t Pixar-quality CG animation.

The mostly CG-generated MVC 3D encodement in in Full HD 3D. It does seem to suffer from a little more ghosting/crosstalk than the Ultimate Wave: Tahiti 3D IMAX title I recently reviewed, but it still looks decent, although the animation itself is not very smooth or natural looking. In 2D, the issues with the image are pretty much the same minus the crosstalk, obviously.
Audio Quality

The English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix was outrageously aggressive. The footsteps of the giant Argentinosaur absolutely boomed while the roars of the creatures were enough to give anyone a facelift. Front-to-back and back-to-front panning was rather aggressive and the listener was totally surrounded in a 360-degree soundfield. One problem was that Donald Sutherland’s narration in the center channel, which was free of any crackle, was sometimes a little lost in the fray of sound effects.

The supplements are a bit weak on this release, consisting only of a making of entitled Lizard Kings and IMAX trailers plus BD-Live, which doesn’t really have any content.

This may be fun to watch for slightly older kids, but the younger ones may be a bit scared by the loud, big-toothed creatures in 3D, and it’s definitely not one of the stronger IMAX documentaries.
