Doctor Who: A Christmas Carol Special on Blu-ray for the New Year

The new Doctor continues his reign on the BBC’s hit sci-fi series over this holiday season with the series’ own homegrown take on Charles Dickens’ classic, A Christmas Carol. And to wrap up the holiday season, the special will see its North American release on Blu0ray and DVD in the new year on February 15, 2011 at a suggested retail price of 19.89 ($24.95 in Canada) for the Blu-ray and $14.98 ($18.74 in Canada) for the DVD.

Press Release:

The BBC continues the momentum of a record year for Doctor Who on February 15 with the DVD and Blu-ray release of Doctor Who: A Christmas Carol. The Christmas special premieres on BBC AMERICA on Christmas Day at 9:00 pm ET, which marks the first time Doctor Who will debut in the U.S. and UK on the same day. Matt Smith and Karen Gillan return as the Doctor and his companion alongside special guest stars Michael Gambon (Harry Potter, The King’s Speech) and opera diva Katherine Jenkins, for a Dickens-inspired odyssey.

Bonus content on the DVD and Blu-ray includes the behind-the-scenes feature Doctor Who Confidential and the live concert, Doctor Who at the Proms 2010, featuring stars Smith, Gillan and Arthur Darvill as hosts.

Doctor Who had a year for the ages in 2010 with a new lead writer and executive producer in Steven Moffat (Sherlock, Coupling), a new Doctor (Smith) and a new companion (Amy Pond, played by Gillan). This creative fusion yielded a remarkable reboot for the beloved drama series that buoyed it to unprecedented heights – record ratings on BBC AMERICA, scintillating reviews and most recently Smith’s appearance on a Doctor Who special edition of The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson.

Steven Moffat commented on A Christmas Carol: “Oh, we’re going for broke with this one. It’s all your favorite Christmas movies at once, in an hour, with monsters. And the Doctor. And a honeymoon. And … oh, you’ll see.  I’ve honestly never been so excited about writing anything. I was laughing madly as I typed along to Christmas songs in April. My neighbors loved it so much they all moved away and set up a website demanding my execution. But I’m fairly sure they did it ironically.”

A Christmas Carol follows newlyweds Amy and Rory (Darvill) as they are trapped on a crashing space liner. The only way The Doctor can rescue them is to save the soul of a lonely old miser, Kazran Sardick (Gambon). But is Sardick, the richest man in Sardicktown, beyond redemption? And what is lurking in the fogs of Christmas Eve?

BONUS FEATURES:

  • Doctor Who Confidential – An inside look at Doctor Who: A Christmas Carol
  • Doctor Who at the Proms 2010 – Premieres in the U.S. Christmas Day at 1:00pm ET on BBC AMERICA. The concert, hosted by stars Smith, Gillan and Darvill, was filmed at the world renowned Royal Albert Hall during the BBC’s annual Proms concert series and features appearances from the Weeping Angels, Daleks and the TARDIS. The BBC National Orchestra of Wales, who record the soundtrack for the series, present a selection of intergalactic music – including Murray Gold’s music from the TV show – plus a selection of classical favorites.
