The Film
[Rating:4/5]
Nip/Tuck writer/producer Richard Levine wrote and directed this dramedy based on his own personal experiences. A melancholy and dark slice of life, Every Day is successful at portraying the real life struggles of a family trying to stay together as they are fraying at the seams/
Liev Schreiber (Salt) plays Ned, a married father of two and writer on a television medical drama. His wife, Jeannie (Helen Hunt, As Good as it Gets) is stressed out and its only getting worse as she has taken on the task of caring for her dying, cantankerous, and incontinent old father (Brian Dennehy), a man she has never gotten along with. On top of this, Ned’s oldest son has declared to the family that he is gay and wants to go to the gay and lesbian prom. Ned just can’t cope with it all.
With all of this stress building up at home, can Ned escape from it all at work? Not a chance. Ned gets hit with even more at work. His job writing for the scandalous medical series reaches new heights stress when his demanding boss (Eddie Izzard) thinks his scripts are too soft and assigns him a sexy writing partner (Carla Gugino). The faithful Ned is all too ready to abandon his nineteen-year marriage for a taste of the wild side and all the fun he’s been missing – but will he?
Every Day is so real its characters absolutely ache with mundanity and misery and the film amuses with the absurdity of everyday occurrences. It’s not exactly filled with belly laughs, but the sort of situations that make you say to yourself “that’s so true.” Levine is so successful at stepping outside of himself, looking at his own world and writing a screenplay that anyone can relate to.
Video Quality
[Rating:4/5]
Captured in high-definition on the excellent Red One camera, Every Day looks much more film-like than it does like an HD presentation and it arrives on Blu-ray in a fine 1080p AVC/MPEG-4 encodement from Image Entertainment. There is some visible video noise that looks more organic and grain-like than it looks like video noise, and the image is quite detailed, even if it does tend towards dimness.
Audio Quality
[Rating:3.5/5]
There isn’t much to be said about the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack offered up on this release other than it provides clean and clear dialogue. Otherwise, it’s a boring mix with very little to be heard in the surround channels and practically non-existent low frequencies.
