The Film

[Rating:2/5]

Excision tells the story of Pauline (AnnaLynne McCord), an unattractive high school outcast who hates her mother Phyllis (Traci Lords). In between caring for her chronically-ill kid sister Grace (Ariel Winter), and desperately wanting to lose her virginity to Adam (Jeremy Sumpter), Pauline’s life has all sorts of ups and downs. Most of all though, Pauline loves her psychosexual fantasies about performing graphic surgery. Will any of Pauline’s dreams come true, or will this be yet another disappointing year of high school? What results is quite the odd film, the kind of movie so weird that I just don’t know how to feel about it.

Excision is the kind of movie you watch, turn the TV off, walk away and simple wonder ‘what have I just watched?’ It’s not necessarily the acting here as I felt that both McCord and Lords turned in convincing performances (especially McCord who nails the psycho, deranged girl bit perfectly). Nor is it the film’s writing as the dialogue flowed well and really the film was never confusing. Moreo, it’s the story in and of itself. Perhaps it’s me not wanting to believe that people, unfortunately I might add, like this out there do exist, or maybe it’s the actual imagery used throughout.

Video Quality

[Rating:5/5]

Excision debuts on Blu-ray with a 2:40:1 framed, AVC MPEG-4 encoded transfer, one of which is excellent. The film’s color palette features a consistently realistic looking image, regardless of whether the image is a brighter, outdoor locale, or darker, more subdued dream moment. Clarity is top notch, facial close-ups result in accurate flesh tones, and detail is never lost. Textures, in particular, feature little, intricate details in our characters clothing. Colors are warm, bright and rarely falter resulting in an all around clean, impressive transfer from Anchor Bay.

Audio Quality

[Rating:4.5/5]

Featuring an English Dolby TrueHD 5.1 mix, this lossless offering excels on nearly all fronts. Dialogue is well reproduced throughout via the center channel. Atmosphere, particularly in a film of this nature, is key. Lucky, the film’s atmosphere is excellent perfectly creating the kind of ambience that really helps to bring home the film’s themes. Discrete effects, like that of a car driving by, fill the rears creating a solid 360-degree sound field. LFE, during a few key sequences, offers up a bit of deep low end. All in all, I didn’t find much to complain about here. Solid effort Anchor Bay.

The Definitive Word

Overall:

[Rating:3/5]

Excision is quite the odd film, and just because this one didn’t appeal to me, doesn’t mean you won’t find something of merit here. What is without a doubt of merit is Anchor Bay’s Blu-ray for the film with its excellent V/A presentation. I suppose give this one a rental to see if this is the kind of movie you enjoy.
