The Film
[Rating:4/5]
Seth MacFarlane turns his twisted comedic sensibilities toward the final episode of the Star Wars Trilogy to wrap up the Family Guy trilogy of parodies of the classic sc-fi flicks that began in 2005 with Family Guy: Blue Harvest and continued last year with Family Guy: Something, Something, Something Dark Side. The Family Guy characters, the Griffins, are back stepping into the lead roles in this off-kilter and in-your-face take on Episode III: The Return of the Jedi, Family Guy: It’s a Trap!
Luke Skywalker (Chris) and Princess Leia (Lois) travel to Tatooine to free Han Solo (Peter) from the slimy slug of a gangster Jabba the Hutt (Joe). Afterwards, the Rebels team up with a tribe of Ewoks to combat the Imperial forces on the forest moon of Endor. Meanwhile the Emperor (Carter Pewterschmidt) and Darth Vader (Stewie) are busy trying to turn Luke to the dark side, but Luke won’t give up on the hope that there is still good in his father. All of this plays out against the backdrop of a newly operational Death Star!
The parody condenses George Lucas’ sci-fi adventure into a 60-miute farce that employs voice cameos from Star Trek: The Next Generation’s Patrick Stewart and Michael Dorn reprising their roles from that series, Carrie Fischer, and Rush Limbaugh as Jabba’s ravenous beast, the Rancor. Probably one of the funnier devices in It’s a Trap! is the use of sock puppets to spoof the Star Wars Special Editions and how out of place the new CGI graphics feel in those films.
It’s a Trap isn’t always uproariously funny, but is a rather amusing pop-culture spoof for anyone who has been around for the past thirty years or so and hasn’t been living under a rock.
Video Quality
[Rating:3.5/5]
The AVC/MPEG-4 1080p encoding for It’s a Trap! is a relatively strong one with clean fills, well defined line art and vibrant colors, but it does falter in places showing some aliasing around some of the edges and strong color banding in spots.
Audio Quality
[Rating:4/5]
The English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix is hardly an aggressive one, but it serves up a good bit of ambience in the surround channels, nice stereo panning across the front channels and extended low frequency response. Dialogue is clean and the dynamic range is relatively wide for a decent home theatre experience in total.

The Definitive Word
Overall:
[Rating:4/5]
As someone who is a fan of the original, unaltered Star Wars trilogy, I have to say that not only am I amazed at how the creators of It’s a Trap! can squeeze the entire Return of the Jedi story into one hour, but I also find its unorthodox, unforgiving humor quite a refreshing and original take on the Star Wars saga. Recommended.
