The Film

[Rating:3/5]

On would expect a film with two Academy Award-winning actors and an actor the calibre of John Turturro to feature some extraordinary acting and Five Corners delivers in that category. Where this 1987 drama from Oscar-winning director Tony Bill (The Sting; Flyboys) disappoints is its lack of complete story and character development.

The story is set in 1964 in the Five Corners area of the Bronx. Psychopath Heinz (Turturro) has just been let out of prison and resumes his obsession with local beauty Linda (Foster), who turns to the former bad boy now turned do-gooder Harry (Robbins) for protection. Unfortunately, Heinz turns violent and Harry, the son of a slain police officer, must turn to his father’s old colleagues on the police force to help rescue Linda from Heinz. That’s the gist of the story, which also features some minor subplots that seem tacked on solely to invoke 1960s nostalgia, like Harry’s attempt to join the civil rights movement and head down south, or a guy and his fiancé going through some relationship issues. There’s not much substance here, but the acting is superb and the direction imparts lots of style.

Video Quality

[Rating:2/5]

This transfer from Image Entertainment looks as if it has been brought to Blu-ray with very minimal effort to clean up oo prepare the image for high definition. The low- to mid-bitrate AVC/MPEG-4 transfer shows lots of source damage and heavy amounts of video noise. Grain is heavy and inconsistent and the detail is soft, particularly in backgrounds and distance shots. Flesh tones also display just a little red push and blacks are completely washed out.

Audio Quality

[Rating:2.5/5]

The sound is supposedly a LPCM 2.0 stereo mix, but there is very little stereo imaging at all. It sounds more like a monaural mix. There is also some very audible clipping in dialogue and sound effects.

Supplemental Materials

[Rating:0/5]

There are zero supplements pertinent to the film included. The disc only features some more trailers for Handmade Films.

The Definitive Word

Overall:

[Rating:1.5/5]

Five Corners may not be one of the best films from director Tony Bill or the actors it stars, but the quality of the performances is some of the best you’ll see in an ultimately forgettable film.
