Forced to Fight tells the story of Shane Slavin (Gary Daniels), a man whose life has only the known world of underground fighting. Promising his wife and young son that he has fought his final fight, Shane is finally looking to settle down to simply enjoy life. That is until his younger brother betrays crime boss Danny (Peter Weller), Shane soon finds himself back in the middle of the square circle. Shane must now confront a gauntlet of savage, no-holds-barred fights in order to save his brother – and his life. What result is a rather surprisingly thrilling film.
Chalk up Forced to Fight as another one of those movies I took a quick glance at its cover art, scoffed, and immediately placed it last in my review pile. Upon further inspection of the film, especially when I saw Peter Weller (someone I’ve always had a somewhat fond appreciation for), my interest piqued. After watching this one, I’ll easily admit that Fight is nowhere a quality film per se, but is damn entertaining. Thrilling at times, particularly during many of the in-your-face fight sequences, Fight works for the most part. The fights themselves, shot with a very quick style, but still feeling quite real, were easily the best part (outside of Weller – who happened to turn in a solid performance.)

Forced to Fight hits the ring with a 1:78:1 framed, AVC MPEG-4 encoded transfer, one of which is nearly perfect. A glance at the film’s technical credits on IMDb reveals just why this transfer excels. Shot using the Red One, Fight has a fine level of detail, most of which is easily visible during the film’s quieter moments. Even though the palette becomes darker, and grittier when the action revs up, detail is never lost. Sweat, pores, blood, saliva, all of this is made out. There’s no instance of noise, scratches or any other print damage, while DNR/EE are absent. All in all, like the film, this transfer surprised me with its quality.
Audio Quality

Audio-wise, Forced to Fight contains a rather subdued DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix. Dialogue is well reproduced via the center channel with no real instances of drop-out. Atmosphere, initially, is quite solid with all the punches, kicks and blows hitting the sound stage well. Once we move to the dialogue moments, the mix doesn’t really have much room for the surrounds. Since these moments do make up a majority of the movie, the overall quality here, unfortunately, is affected.

While Forced to Fight won’t win any awards, I still found the film to be rather entertaining – thanks in part to Peter Weller’s performance as well as a few realistic fights. Likewise Image’s Blu-ray features a more than capable technical presentation. I’m going to recommend this one as a strong rental for a lazy afternoon.
