SUMMARY

An origin story for the rebellious Furiosa from Mad Max: Fury Road.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is a prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road, telling the story of how its titular character, and one of the main characters from the previous film, came to be. Young Furiosa (played by Alyla Browne) is kidnapped from Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a Genghis Khan-like figure named Warlord Dementus (Chris Hemsworth), leader of the great Biker Horde that rule the wasteland. But Dementus wants to take over the Citadel ruled over by The Immortan Joe (Lachy Hulme), and Furiosa falls into Immortan Joe’s hands. Years later, Furiosa (now played by Anya Taylor-Joy) wants revenge on Dementus, so she stows away on a rig with Praetorian Jack (Tom Burke) and finds herself caught up in the battles on the Fury Road.

The film, which unfolds in chapters, moves much more slowly than Fury Road, with more focus on character than action – not there is no action in this film. If anyone comes into this expecting Fury Road part two, they will be disappointed, but it stands on its own quite well, especially given Taylor-Joy’s standout performance as Furiosa, and cinematographer Simon Duggan’s excellent handling of the visuals in place of John Seale. The transition is almost seamless. When you see the high octane racing across the desert and quick edits, you will know you are back into the off-kilter world of Mad Max.

The Video

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga was shot by cinematographer Simon Duggan on the Arri Alexa 65 with Arri Prime DNA lenses in ARRIRAW 6.5K and the Red V-Raptor in Redcode RAW 8K. It is presented on 4K Ultra HD in a 2.39:1 HEVC 2160p (4K UHD) Dolby Vision encodement. The film on this disc is every bit as, if not even more so, a reference-level presentation as Mad Max: Fury Road. The image is pristine, with crisp detail and vibrant color. Furiosa has a similar color palette to Fury Road, but a little less Crayola. The granules of sand on the Fury Road can still be seen in minutiae and the flames in explosions pop with three-dimensional detail. Black levels are inky while shadows look nuanced.

The Audio

Furiosa gets a spectacular, in-your-face lossless English Dolby Atmos that almost rivals the Atmos mix on Mad Max: Fury Road. The film is not as action filled, so there are more sequences where the sound is a little less aggressive, but during the more aggressive sequences on the Fury Road and elsewhere, we get a lot of height awareness, big low frequencies that workout the subs, and massive dynamic range. This is magnificent, reference track. There is also a lossless Italian Dolby Atmos dub among other dubs in Dolby Digital 5.1.

The Supplements

There are a few interviews included with cast and crew, but nothing that is absolutely necessary viewing.

Bonus Features:

  • Movies Anywhere Digital Code
  • Highway to Valhalla: In Pursuit of Furiosa (1080p; 00:57:00)
  • Darkest Angel: Anya Taylor-Joy as Furiosa (1080p; 00:10:19)
  • Motorbike Messiah: Chris Hemsworth as Dementus (1080p; 00:10:02)
  • Furiosa: Stowaway to Nowhere (1080p; 00:11:13)

The Final Assessment

This prequel is excellent home theater fodder. The film never reaches the same level of its predecessor but it manages to remain interesting never the less.
