The Series

[Rating:4/5]

Hasboro’s classic G.I. Joe characters are back in an animated series one again in this new, spruced up series, G.I. Joe: Renegades. Just as fans of the Joes wold expect, it’s nonstop action with lots of car chases and sci-fi gadgetry, but nothing too over-the-top so as to make it inappropriate for kids. The animation isn’t exactly cutting edge as the character designs are somewhat plain and blocky and backgrounds minimal, but the style updates  previous G.I. Joe series and is very much in keeping with what we’ve come to expect from the style of G.I Joe.

The story brings back all the favorite characters, Scarlett, Duke, Ripcord, Tunnel Rat, Roadblock, and Snake Eyes, but we see them from the beginning of their association. When they go on a mission to infiltrate the mysterious Cobra Corporation to gather intelligence proving that the company is into something illegal, the mission goes bad and the soldiers are framed for a crime. That’s when they go on the lam and try to prove their innocence by finding the proof against Cobra that they need. Along the way, they encounter numerous adventures and dangers while on the run from another elite squad of soldiers hunting them down, as well as Cobra’s own paramilitary forces. Still, this honorable group of “average Joes” always finds the time to help out people in need whenever they find someone who needs their help. As the series continues, the Joes uncover secrets behind Cobra, such as the truth about the nefarious leader of Cobra Corporation and the secret experiments on humans the company is carrying out.

Video Quality

[Rating:4/5]

While the line art and colors generally look good in this AVC/MPEG-4 1080p encodement from Shout! Factory, there is an odd blurriness or softness that occurs throughout the series, especially when the “camera” moves in for a close-up on characters. The best scenes seem to be the midrange shots of the animation where the image shows the most crispness. Apart from that and a little bit of color banding from time to time, the transfer is free from any other anomalies.

Audio Quality

[Rating:5/5]

G.I. Joe: Renegades comes with just the sort of aggressive, hyperactive soundtrack you’d expect from a action-oriented animated series like this. The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 (48kHz/24-bit) soundtrack very well balanced between the front and surround channels, offering an abundance of atmospherics and ambience, and it hits you with lots of discrete sound effects from the rear, front and sides. There’s lots of directional panning to follow action, be it dialogue, vehicles, or weaponry. Things are likely to track from one side of the room to the next or even move from in front of you, over your head to behind you. Dynamics are superb and low frequencies give everything a good amount of “oomph.”
