The Performance
[Rating:2/5]
Critiquing stand-up comedy is always a tricky thing, because what makes people laugh is so subjective. One person’s “greatest comedian ever” could very well be another person’s dud. When it comes to Gabriel Iglesias, I have to say that I was not familiar with the comedian at all prior to unwrapping this Blu-ray for review, so I had no expectations one way or the other.
The show is from 2009 and the comedian performed in front of a packed house in El Paso, Texas’ historic Plaza Theater. His fans surely seem to like him, but, unfortunately for me, it didn’t take too long before I came to the conclusion that Iglesias is no more than a one trick pony, his act consisting of little more than fat jokes. Hey, he is a “fluffy” guy after all. Apart from that, Iglesias throws in some material on domestic life that is little more than above average and somehow comes back to, you guessed it, fat jokes. I can’t say that I really laughed very hard while watching his routine, but I’m sure he has his crowd, as witnessed by the sold out theater in El Paso.

The AVC/MPEG-4 1080i/60 encoding, captured in HD, is a typical “live concert” production, looking lifelike and suffering the same issues with lighting and video noise one would expect from such a show. Otherwise, it is fairly detailed and artifact free, getting the job done for such material.

The main soundtrack is limited to a lossy Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack. The mix is fairly believable, with an abundance of ambience and just the right amount of crowd noise to place listeners in the performance space, but at times the applause and laughter sounds just a bit jarring. It would have been nice to hear this in a lossless variety.
Supplemental Materials
[Rating:2/5]
The supplements offer a bit more time with the comedian, particularly in a “deleted scene,” which is a bit removed from the main show, and the audience Q&A session. There are also two brief stand-up segments from a couple of other comedians that seem funnier than Iglesias.
The supplements provided with this release are:
- Deleted Scene: High School Reunion (1.78:1; 1080i/60; 0:07.46)
- Fluffy’s Friends Hit the Stage:
- Martin Moreno (1.78:1; 1080i/60; 0:05.00)
- Noe Gonzalez (1.78:1; 1080i/60; 0:04.10)
- Onstage Q&A with the Fans (1.78:1; 1080i/60; 0:08.09)
The Definitive Word

I don’t think I’m Not Fat…I’m Fluffy will win many converts for Iglesias, but for loyal fans it offers a decent performance of his core comedic style.
