Perhaps I have outgrown the age where seeing a live performance of actors playing their TV characters appeals to me. Come to think of it, I don’t think this sort of thing ever really appealed to me at all. I was always disappointed, for instance, when I went to see something like Disney on Ice and saw a giant person in a Mickey Mouse suit skating around. That wasn’t Mickey Mouse! Likewise, when I see kids these days screaming over Hannah Montana in concert or Glee, I just don’t get it.
Glee the Concert, a full concert in name only, a concert performance of the New Sensations from the TV series doing the thing that they do, with all the young cast members from Glee – in character – singing their big iTunes hits. Unfortunately, unlike the actual tour – yes, there was an actual tour – the producers of this film have decided to chop this film up and intersperse footage of fans of the show offering their encouraging stories of how watching Glee changed their lives. For example, there’s a kid who was forcefully outed as being gay in the eighth grade, a girl who suffers from Aspergers telling how she managed to overcome her anxieties and make friends, and young woman who is head cheerleader at her high school who also happens to be a “little person” that gets asked out to the prom by a boy of normal height.
These are all inspiring stories for young people, no doubt, but perhaps these were best served being left on the special features section of the home video release, rather that being used to constantly interrupt the musical performances.

The Glee Concert film was originally captured in 3D using the Pace Fusion 3D camera. Unfortunately, we were only sent the 2D Blu-ray version of the film. As far as high definition productions go, this AVC transfer from Fox is a solid one with minimal video noise, no macroblocking from all the flashing lights and motion, and strong colors and flesh tones.
Audio Quality

Audio, in DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 (48kHz/24-bit), could have been a bit better, with better instrumental separation and tighter bass versus the boominess that this mix prefers, otherwise it does provide the big arena sound that the concert seeks to convey rather well. The surrounds have big ambience mixed with some crowd noise that makes things sound lively.

A flawed concert film, Glee the Concert will most definitely be for only the most avid Gleeks out there. The song selection from the show’s growing wealth of hits are decent, even if many of the performances are shortened. Yet, tracks like “Jesse’s Girl,” “Valerie,” “Ain’t No Way” “Rain on My Parade,” and “Don’t Stop Believing” live will be worth it for fans.
