The Film
[Rating:2.5/5]
Ozzy Osbourne’s son Jack worked alongside director’s Mike Fleiss and Mike Piscitelli to follow his father on tour for over two-years in order to create this telling documentary about his dad. To his and his father’s credit, it is not an attempt to apply a shiny veneer to the Ozzy legacy, but, rather, it lays down the cold, honest truth about the once (and always) Sabbath frontman, his life-long struggle with substance abuse, and the toll it took on his family life. Neither his first and oldest children from his first marriage, nor the more famous children from his second marriage to Sharon spare the harsh criticism of what a miserable, absentee father he was.
Of course, much of the stories of his wild antics, as told by Ozzy himself, Sharon (Osbourne, his wife), and others, including Tommy Lee (of Mötley Crüe fame) and former bandmates from Black Sabbath will be of much surprise to longtime fans of Osbourne’s. Recounted are the infamous tales of Ozzy biting the head off of a dove in an A&R exec’s office, which, subsequently leads to him biting the head off a bat on stage and undergoing a course of rabies shots. Then there’s the ant snorting, domestic abuse incident, etc., etc. ad infinitum. Of course, no Ozzy Osbourne story is complete without mention of Ozzy’s first backing guitarist, the late and legendary Randy Rhoads, who died in a terrible plane crash.
Video Quality
[Rating:4/5]
The 1080i/60 AVC/MPEG-4 picture is a mixture of vintage Sabbath and Ozzy footage, old photographs, and newly captured high definition imagery. For obvious reasons, some of the old video footage isn’t up to snuff, but the overall quality is spot-on for this sort of documentary, although in some places white levels look a bit too hot.
Audio Quality
[Rating:4/5]
The audio is rather straightforward, as one would expect from a documentary. The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix is front-heavy with little going on in the surround channels, even during the brief snippets of live concert footage, but it does give some good punch to the, albeit, brief musical performance clips. The LPCM 2.0 option would do just as well, in all honesty. There is also a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix provided.

The Definitive Word
Overall:
[Rating:3/5]
This may be worthwhile for the most ardent of Ozzy Osbourne fans or if you have been longing for a fix of The Osbournes since they went off the air, but with Ozzy being five-years sober, his “antics” might not be of as much vicarious interest any longer. If you really need to see it, rent it, otherwise, skip it.
