The DC Comics universe is filled with characters that have been loved by fans for many years. From comic books, graphic novels and films to conventions, the world of superheroes is a vibrant one. The mythology of these characters is one that has permeated popular culture. They have become our modern gods, the embodiment of our modern ethos.
Green Lantern: First Flight is part of the DC Universe series of direct-to-video releases that tell the origins the DC Comics superheroes. First Flight tells of the very first sentient beings in the universe, the Guardians, how they harnessed the power of the green element Ion to create the most powerful energy in the world, the green battery, to power the green rings worn by those who would help protect the universe from evil and become part of the Green Lantern Corps.
First Flight also shows how Hal Jordan, a test pilot, becomes the first human to become part of the Green Lantern Corps when he is recruited into the corps upon the death of one of the Lanterns and given one of the rings. Being mentored by Sinestro, one of the most powerful of the Lanterns, Hal quickly learns that Sinestro’s ideology is not in league with the Corps’ or the guardians’ anymore. Sinestero feels the Corps has been turned into little more than “garbage collectors” so he sets out searching for the yellow element, the only element that the green battery is powerless against, in order to weaken the guardians, which leads to the ultimate battle between Hal and Sinestro.
First Flight remains true to the Green Lantern series reboot and is a faithful comic-to-animation rendition. With strong animation, solid voice acting from everyone, and an interesting villain, Green Lantern fans should be happy to see their superheroe’s origins come to life in this film.

Green Lantern’s 1.78:1 1080p/24 picture is provided in a VC-1 encoding that is pristine, free from any artifacts and beautifully detailed. The color reproduction is vibrant with no evidence of noise and the line art is clean and well delineated. This is a reference release for hand-drawn animation.
Audio Quality

The sole option on this release is an English Dolby TrueHD 5.1 mix, which is much appreciated as the norm for these Warner animated releases has been Dolby Digital. The TrueHD mix is a solid effort as well, with clean dialogue, a punchy midrange and low frequencies that extend well down to the mid low range. The mix is quite active, with panning through the surrounds and many atmospheric sound effects as well.

There are a hefty amount of supplements offered up on Green Lantern: First Flight, including additional episodes of the Green Lantern and a Duck Dodgers episode featuring Dodgers as the Green Lantern. As far as origin stories go, First Flight sets the story down the right path and fans of Green Lantern should surely appreciate this outing from DC Comics, which is pretty faithful to the comic’s reboot.
