Gushing Over Magical Girls is an anime series based on a Japanese magical girl manga. It follows the female protagonist Hiiragi Utena an awkward, introverted high school girl fascinated with magical girls, the trio that protect her town, Tres Magia. One day, a mascot named Venalita approaches Utena and offers her the opportunity to gain magical powers, but rather than become a hero, she has been tricked into becoming one of the villains that must fight against the magical girls she loves so much.
From now on, adopting the persona of Magia Baiser when she transforms, Utena finds herself battling Tres Magia, who also happen to be classmates of hers. This is one of the plot holes one will have to overlook for the sake of buying into the narrative as no one seems to recognize each other as magical girls.
Utena’s inner desires take control of her as Magia Baiser – she becomes overwhelmingly perverted and sexually sadistic towards her opponents, often trapping them in bondage, spanking them, whipping them, or even tickling them into submission.
Telling more about the series is a giveaway of things to come, but that is the general gist. The series flips the narrative of most maho shojo, taking the perspective of the villains rather than the heroines, like in the classic from the genre Sailor Moon, maybe the most well-known and the paragon from which many of the genre take their cues. Gushing Over Magical Girls takes the fundamentals of Sailor Moon and infuses doses of ecchi and fan service, and much more adult, uncensored content for a fun ride.
The digital animation for Gushing Over Magical Girls is presented in a 1.78:1 AVC 1080p encodement on Blu-ray that has vibrant colors, clean line art, and is free from video noise apart from the slightest hint of some banding in some color fills.
The Audio
Gushing Over Magical Girls comes to Blu-ray with the original Japanese-language audio mix in lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 stereo. It is clear, dynamic, and has good stereo imaging.

The Final Assessment
This series was surprisingly refreshing for a magical girl series, reinvigorating the genre with a little adult flare and following a likable villain rather than the heroine. The animation is well done, with attractive characters and vibrant colors. Recommended.
