Josh Radnor (TV’s How I Met Your Mother) makes his filmmaking debut in this indie feature which he helmed as writer, director, producer, and acted in as the lead as well. His story involves the lives of six twenty-something New Yorkers balancing love, work, and the challenges brought on by adulthood.
Sam Wexler (Radnor) is a struggling short story writer trying to sell his first novel who’s having a particularly bad day when he finds a young boy on the subway separated from his family. Making the unwise decision to take the boy into his apartment, he develops a bond with the gifted but troubled young foster child – and this can only mean trouble. Meanwhile, Sam has fallen for a girl named Mississippi (Kate Mara) at a local bar and his best friend in the world Annie (Malin Ackerman) struggles with her self-image due to alopecia, the lack of hair, and the inability to commit. Two other friends fight to save their longterm relationship when one wants to move California and the other wants to stay in New York.
Happythankyoumoreplease is the kind of pleasant, slice of life, debut that is not too risky yet not too bland. It’s Woody Allen “lite,” if you will. In fact, at one point two characters in the film reference Woody Allen indirectly. Radnor shows some promise here and Happythankyou is pleasurable to watch, reminding one somewhat of another TV stars filmmaking debut, Zach Braff’s Garden State, only this one lacks the acting chops of Natalie Portman to push it over the top.

Captured in high definition on a Red One camera, Happythankyoumoreplease arrives in a progressive encodement with an AVC/MPEG-4 1080p transfer from Anchor Bay Entertainment that looks nearly flawless. The color palette isn’t always natural, but the image always looks quite good, with strong detail and a clean presentation.
Audio Quality

There’s a simple English Dolby TrueHD 5.1 mix that remains rather front-heavy from start to finish and provides clean, full dialogue with some very low-level ambience in the surround channels. It really comes alive when the songs from Jaymay are brought to the fore in the mix showing its spaciousness and dynamics.

Quirky, funny, and thoughtful, this oddball indie comedy from Josh Radnor shows that he has a lot of potential if he continues to pursue a path in creating works for the big screen. A likable film with good acting, Happythankyoumore please doesn’t leave much to criticize other than it doesn’t take much risks.
