The Film

[Rating:3/5]

Hoodwinked revitalized the Little Red Riding Hood story in a sassy uptempo animated version with entertaining characters well supported by its vocal cast. Sequels often find it difficult to keep pace with their predecessors, and, upfront, many will find this to be true of Hoodwinked Too. The story line of Red (Hayden Paniterri) seeking to follow in Granny’s (Glenn Close) Sister of the Hood footsteps, smacks of Kung Foo among others. The supporting cast features some entertaining performances by Patrick Warburton (Wolf), David Ogden Stiers (Nicky Flippers), Joan Cusack (Wicked Witch), Cory Edwards (Twitchy), and last but not least Bill Hader (Hansel) and Amy Poehler (Gretel). However, the attempts at nursery rhyme humor run out of gas pretty early in the proceedings, and the multiple episodic plot injections show an overall lack of invention. The cartoon-oriented visuals and video game frenetic action will probably second installment.

Video Quality

[Rating:4/5]

As was the case with the original Hoodwinked, the animation and CGI-created characters are uniformly excellent, and come across quite vividly. There are a number of special effects that work well in the context of an otherwise meandering plot. Detail and color are also quite good, in the best Pixar-like tradition.

Audio Quality

[Rating:3.5/5]

Hoodwinked Too has a number of action sequences which are decently supported through the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack. While the surround special audio effects are sparse, the overall sound is crisp with a lot of boom and tizzle.

Supplemental Materials

[Rating:2/5]

Movie videos by Hayden Panettiere, Lavey Cole, and CeeJ are mildly entertaining. Included are additional extras featuring the voices behind the characters and the storyboard sequences which are worth one view.

The Definitive Word

Overall:

[Rating:3/5]

Given the generous vocal casting, including Cheech and Chong, Martin Short, Brad Garrett, Andy Dick, David Alan Grier, and, heavens to murgatroyd, Wayne Newton, it is clear that a lot was expected from the final mix. Fairy tale makeovers on the large screen have had a checkered history and rely heavily on the creative genius behind the projects. In the case of Hoodwinked Too, there has been obvious effort to create a diverting hour and fifteen minutes. Given the relative adult level of the script and characters, we are not talking Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty or Beauty and the Beast, and, in this respect, the clever quotient is considerably less than the first entry in the Hoodwinked field. As a non ADHD senior adult, I still found my attention span was often attenuated by this film. Perhaps, this is a case of better luck next time.
