I’ve been taking little peeks at this F/X cable network comedy series on and off for the past several years and, frankly, I have to admit upfront that the humor just eludes me. The first season was perhaps the most inexplicable, lacking the charisma and brand name of Danny DeVito. Subsequent seasons improved only modestly, in this reviewer’s opinion, but the series just never seemed to shake off one glaring truth – that it is no more than a foul-mouthed, 2000’s version of Seinfeld, with just a twist of Cheers thrown in for good measure.
A story of a group of nihilistic friends in Philadelphia that run an Irish pub, it is, simply put, the rebirth of a show about nothing. As they make their ways through the complicated world, these rude, crude, and thoughtless group of individuals place themselves in all manner of ludicrous situations, out of which they must somehow wiggle.
Season 6 apparently has these folks hitting a serious speed bump in creativity. I say apparently, because I don’t think the creativity was really flowing at such a high level to begin with, despite all the praise that has been lavished upon this series. But, to give them the benefit of the doubt, the cast/creators had to deal with the pregnancy of Kaitlin Olson (“Dee”), and also the absence of one of their top directors behind the camera, Fred Savage. The end result of all of this was a plodding 12-episode season with only a few laughs here and there, phoned-in stories like people being lost in the woods and thinking a rabbit captures their soul, and far too much reliance on pregnancy jokes.
Other season highlights include Mac (Rob McElhenney) fighting against gay marriage because he’s jealous his “tranny” girlfriend got married after a sex change, the gang buys a boat so they can pick up chicks, Dee and Dennis (Glenn Howerton) start a podcast with their unusual banter, and the guys screen their Lethal Weapon 5 movie after a debate about whether or not appearing in blackface is racist.
Video Quality

The AVC encodement has natural flesh tones and pretty deep blacks that don’t crush. Contrast isn’t as wide as it could be and the brighter scenes tend to look somewhat too hot. There’s also just a hint of video noise.
Audio Quality

While this DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix does present clean and intelligible dialogue with a relatively wide spread of sound across the front, there is hardly any activity in the surround channels, which remain practically silent, filled with only very low-level ambient information.

The supplements include the mildly amusing Dennis and Dee podcasts, one of the season’s many gags, as well as the “Extended Cut” of the guy’s Lethal Weapon 5 movie along with a few audio commentaries, deleted scenes, and bloopers that yield more laughs than the actual season.

Perhaps Season 7 will be better, but in all honesty, I’ve tried to like this series, and if it hasn’t happened yet, I don’t think it ever will. It just makes me remember how much I miss the originator of this sort of thing, Seinfeld.
