The Film

In this double feature of Jackie Chan films, we’re given Police Story and Police Story 2, both directed by Chan himself. Regarded as some of Chan’s best work (especially in his native Hong Kong), Police Story finds Chan playing Chan Ka-Kui, a cop assigned to protect a witness whose testimony could bring down an infamous drug baron, Chu; however, when the witness gets away from Chan, Chu is set free due to there being no evidence. When Chan is framed for murder by Chu, Chan must now find this witness if he hopes to save both of their lives.

Police Story 2 finds Chan Ka-Kui having been demoted to traffic duty, following the events of the first film. Even though he isn’t a cop anymore, he finds himself searching for vengeful mobsters who have targeted Hong Kong as their next destination. Kidnapping Chan’s girlfriend May, Chan must now find these terrorists, if he hopes to save both her life and the lives of the city he loves.

There’s just something about Jackie Chan films, something that I always find entertaining. Maybe it’s the fact that he typically does a majority (if not all) of his stunts (especially in these early efforts.) Or maybe it’s the action sequences. Always fast paced, kind of edge of your seat thrills as kicks and punches fly (as do bodies.) The actual plots may be recycled, but I easily admit that I’ll always have a place in my collection for Chan films.

Video Quality

Police Story arrives with a 2:33:1 framed, AVC MPEG-4 encoded transfer, while Police Story 2 arrives with a 2:34:1 framed, AVC MPEG-4 encoded transfer. The film’s both have a somewhat darker palette, focusing more on natural light versus artificial lighting. While this does help the films have a realistic look and feel to them, detail can tend to suffer. Detail is soft throughout with no real notice of anything that screams hi-def. While this may sound like a big detractor, I will easily admit that (despite this fact), the film’s look fine. There’s no notice of print damage, nor any scratches. There’s a slight layer of film grain as well. All in all, these transfers are the best the films will ever look – short of a full transfer overhaul.

Audio Quality

Audio-wise, both films are given a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless mix available in English (with both receiving a Cantonese option.) Each also has an optional English dub, I obviously chose the lossless Cantonese option, as the dubs sounded terrible. For the most part, the lossless mixes are just fine. Dialogue is easy to understand (and read), while a majority of the effects (like gun fire and a few explosions/crashes) are front heavy. While this does result in a lack of surround activity, I didn’t find this to be a major issue. All in all, these mixes get the job done.

For Jackie Chan fans, this double feature pack is a no brainer. Everyone else? I’m going to recommend this one as a strong rental (especially for old school action fans.)
