The Film
[Rating:3.5/5]
With all of his characters in tow, Controlled Chaos finds comedian Jeff Dunham performing his unique sense of comedy for another sold out show. Included are Walter (the grumpy retiree), Peanut (furry and manic), Jose Jalapeno (the spicy pepper from south of the border), Achmed the Dead Terrorist (probably his most known puppet), Bubba J (beer drinking redneck), Sweet Daddy Dee (Dunham’s “PIMP”), Melvin the Superhero Guy (practical joker) and Achmed Jr (son of Achmed) to name a few. Here, Dunham speaks on a wide range of topics including family, all with the use of different friends. Naturally, the different bits involving his puppets are quite funny.
Having seen a few of Jeff Dunham’s bits on Youtube and Comedy Central, I was only familiar with his Achmed the Dead Terrorist character. In particular the moments with Achmed and Achmed Jr. were the best of the bunch. While most of his other puppets are used, including the very funny and grumpy Walter, the real humor is behind Dunham’s delivery. He has a unique sense of style via his different puppets, the kind of humor that anyone can really enjoy and appreciate it. Dunham’s Controlled Chaos, as per most of his material, is laugh out loud funny. Well Recommended for those looking for a good laugh.

The 1:78:1 framed, AVC/MPEG-4 encoded transfer is decent. Faring like something that might be seen on Comedy Central HD, Controlled Chaos arrives with decent results. Colors are mostly accurate, in particular the dark blues of Dunham’s suit. Wide shots of the audience/auditorium result in a bit of artificating. Detail, mostly the close ups of the varying puppets, is impressive at times. Minus that, the overall image felt very flat lacking any real punch. All in all, this an acceptable image that suits the live performance well.

The film’s provided Dolby TrueHD 5.1 track is fairly solid. Dialogue is well reproduced throughout, which is a key component here. Atmosphere is mostly subdued minus the audience laughing. Moments like this do create a kind of sense of you being there. LFE is better than expected offering up solid low-end thanks in part to the varying musical bits the production used. Really this is the kind of audio presentation we might expect. Nothing overly impressive, but just right for the material at hand.
