Jersey Shore Shark Attack tells the story of a local group of Jersey guys and gals who know nothing but partying, and that won’t ever stop with Fourth of July right around the corner. Thinking the holiday will be more drinking, and more parties, the crew suddenly have to band together to stop a bunch of man-eating albino sharks. Wait, wait. Lemme think about this. No, no I’m really, really not making this up at all. The plot has these random, tanned up folk fighting sharks. Yes, because (after all) any random joe knows how to battle a shark. *sigh* So, this is what movies are coming to in this day-and-era.
Perhaps because of my absolute disdain toward the reality TV series Jersey Shore, I went into this just knowing I’d absolutely hate it. Well, such is the case, as I couldn’t find anything, outside of the acting, to be even remotely appealing here. The acting is really the only slight aspect that saves this one from being something one should completely avoid (well, outside of the fan base). The plot is inane, boring and, at times, just ludicrous. Yes, I’m aware that the target audience for this film won’t care about the plot, and they’ll just want to see a bunch of hot, young actors walking around in tight bikini’s and washboard abs; however, that doesn’t give this movie and its makers the ‘get out of jail’ free card. Substance is still substance and, in the end, this one is devoid of it.

While the film may be dreadfully bad, the same can’t be said for this 1:78:1 framed, AVC MPEG-4 transfer. With the film taken place mostly outdoor, with many, many beach moments, the color palette focuses on the brighter colors. Our characters consistently looked sharp, albeit overly tanned in my eye. Detail was rock solid throughout, particularly that of the exterior, daylight scenes. Even the night shots looked fine, as I didn’t notice any black crush or smearing, loss of detail or any real instance of grain and noise. Really, the image just has a very natural, very real look to it. All in all, this is a fantastic effort from Anchor Bay.

Shark Attack arrives with a Dolby TrueHD 5.1 track, which is just about as impressive as the aforementioned video. Dialogue, as mundane and heavily ‘Jersified’ (like that one, don’t you) that it is, is well reproduced via the center channel. Atmosphere is actually quite good, especially that during all the varying musical moments. LFE is fine as well, as the digital beasts roar by us accompanied with deep, immersive low-end. All in all, this track is a solid effort regardless of the quality of the film.

The Definitive Word
Overall:
[Rating:2/5]
Simply put, unless you’re a diehard fan of everything surrounding Jersey Shore and its name, avoid this Shark Attack at all costs. Even though Anchor Bay’s Blu-ray release features a nearly perfect technical presentation, that still doesn’t save this one.
