The Performance

[Rating:3.5/5]

As I always say when it comes to reviewing these stand-up performances, comedy is a very personal thing, particularly, it seems, stand up. What one person finds hysterically amusing another might find terribly dull, such is the nature of the art form.

For me, Kathleen Madigan, an American Comedy Award winner for Best Female Comic and Last Comic Standing contestant falls somewhere in the middle. I only found her act here from New York City’s Gramercy Theater mildly amusing. Her conversational style, filled with observations on family, religion, and politics, is enough to induce a chuckle here and there, like a funny lady at a checkout counter, but never a real belly laugh.

Video Quality

[Rating:3.5/5]

There seems to be a high amount of video noise in this 1080i/60 AVC/MPEG-4 encoding, despite the show itself being relatively well lit. Other than that, the image has natural flesh tones and a life-like appearance.

Audio Quality

[Rating:4.5/5]

The sole audio option is a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack that more than adequately get the job done for this sort of material. The ambient mix puts listeners right in the performance space, keeps crowd noise at a minimum and provides clean, intelligible dialogue.

Supplemental Materials

[Rating:1/5]

Two standard definition featurettes that offer up some more time with Madigan are the sole extras provided, leaving this release feeling a bit underwhelming in the supplemental department.

The supplements provided with this release are:

  • Interview (1.78:1; 480i/60; 0:03.41)
  • Behind the Scenes (1.78:1; 480i/60; 0:15.26)

The Definitive Word

Overall:

[Rating:3.5/5]

Kathleen Madigan: Gone Madigan will provide a solid comedic excursion if Madigan’s brand of comedy is your thing. The Blu-ray captures the performance adequately and provides a strong lossless soundtrack, albeit on a pretty barebones release.
