The Film

[Rating:3.5/5]

Katy Perry The Movie: Part of Me is aimed squarely at the hordes of fanatical teens and tweens devoted to the brand that is Katy Perry. The film is an original 3D production (although we here review the 2D-only version of the Blu-ray release), that is a spectacle every bit as worthy of Ms. Perry’s hyperactive, gleeful persona that has made her such a success with tweens and teens around the world.

Part of Me morphs concert film with biography in the same vein as Justin Bieber’s Never Say Never, only it does it with far less self-indulgence and back patting. It chronicles Perry’s life and career from her childhood as the the daughter of traveling Pentecostal Christian preacher parents, to her first Contemporary Christian album release at the young age of 15, before her struggles to breakaway from her christian roots, inspired by Alanis Morrissette, and sign with a major label. Featured are interviews with numerous teenage fans of various ages inspired by the energetic pop queen as well as her own brother, sister, and most touchingly, her 90-year-old grandmother.

The film, which is also a document of Perry’s massive California Dreams world tour, also happened to coincide with her very public marriage and subsequent breakup with Russell Brand. Rather than gloss this over or avoid it entirely, much to Perry’s credit, they work this into the film, showing her near emotional breakdown and determination to perform even as she could barely hold herself together. It offers a counterweight to the kinetic energy and Day-Glo world of the often interrupted live performances that include the fan favorites “Firework,” “Teenage Dream” and “I Kissed a Girl.’

Video Quality

[Rating:4/5]

An original high definition 3D production done on the Red Epic at 5K, of which we are here reviewing the plain ol’ 2D release (a 3D Blu-ray is also available), Katy Perry’s Part of Me looks about as good as any documentary/concert movie could look. The live performances dazzle with their colors and flashing lights while limiting artifacts and video noise. There are lots of other lower quality sources mixed in, however, such as cellphone video, older video sources of Perry, and so forth that do not meet the same standards.

Audio Quality

[Rating:4/5]

The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 (48kHz/24-bit) soundtrack certainly does evoke an over-the-top arena concert performance during the live performances with big low frequencies and lots of performance space ambience, but it doesn’t offer much in the way of dynamics. Everything is rather loud and pushed. That being said, the documentary sequences are clean and natural sounding.

The Definitive Word

Overall:

[Rating:4/5]

Fans should eat this up like sugary cotton candy and Mountain Dew, but even if you don’t know much about Katy Perry, her dizzying and goofy persona mixed with some real heartbreak and true story of struggle to make it to the top just may get your attention.

  1. Katy Perry isn’t my favorite musician but I appreciate her.
She is positive and bubbly which makes it ok that my daughters love her as much
as they do. We didn’t get to see the movie when it was out in theaters so I
decided to rent it through my Blockbuster @ Home Queue. The movie will be here in
a few days so the girls and I can hang out for the afternoon. I work for DISH
so I’ve been using the service for a while now and I like it. Katy doesn’t seem
afraid of showing all of her emotions on camera and that seems to make it more
superficial. It’s also a good platform for my kids to understand that if you
work hard for your dreams, you can do anything you want. I’m really excited fro
the behind the scenes stuff. I’m sure my girls will love it.
