Former MADtv cast members Keegan-Michael Kay and James Peele team up once more to poke fun at all topics ranging from President Obama, bar mitzvah’s, Nazis, soul food, and other taboo subjects. These issues are tackled with a typically funny, sometimes shake your head style humor. All this and more in this First Season of the Comedy Central series Key & Peele.

Political satire is nothing new, with numerous comics seemingly hitting nearly every topic known to man. Every Saturday, SNL pokes fun at President Obama, and Governor Romney, while somewhere Lewis Black is on stage doing his angry bits, and Bill Maher is injecting his intelligent political banter. Then you have Keegan-Michael Kay and James Peele and their sense of humor. Focusing not just on political humor, the duo hit many different subjects in this first season. From the common choice of President Obama, to rapper Lil Wayne, it seems like no stone is left unturned by them. If you have happened to every see either of these two during their MADtv stint, you know exactly what you’re getting into once you pop this disc in. Personally, I can’t think of many funnier folks than these two.

The First Season of Key & Peele arrives with a 1:78:1 framed, AVC MPEG-4 encoded transfer, which looks fairly solid throughout. Colors vary from skit to skit, ranging from dark blues and blacks to bright yellows and whites of a city skyline. Neither color spectrum caused any noticeable problems like smearing. Detail is solid while contrast levels remained mostly accurate (there are a few instances of banding) during each of the 8 episodes found on this Blu-ray release. All in all, this is a transfer that fans will enjoy, but certainly won’t pull out to demonstrate TV on Blu-ray.

Audio Quality

Featuring a Dolby TrueHD 5.1 mix, the provided lossless track did what needed to be done. With this being a in front of an audience skit series, dialogue reproduction is crucial. Luckily, dialogue is well reproduced throughout via the center channel. LFE can be deep and immersive at times, mostly thanks in part to the varying musical cues used during the sketches. Atmosphere is somewhat limited but does open up in one or two moments. Akin to that of the aforementioned video, this track won’t win any awards, but does represent the series intentions well.

While the subject matters covered by Key & Peele in their 1st seasons aren’t necessarily brand new, their unique sense of style, wit, and humor makes them worth checking out. Comedy Central’s Blu-ray for their first season arrives with a serviceable technical presentation and a few features. Recommended for fans of the duo, and as a strong rental for those looking for a few laughs after a long day.
