The Film
[Rating:4/5]
Veteran IMAX filmmaker Stephen Low takes you on a journey through the the big skies in this latest feature, although the title, Legends of Flight, might be a bit of a stretch. Focusing on the evolution of commercial flight and the industry’s two most recent, well-publicized achievements, the monstrous Airbus A380 and Boeing 787, Legends of Flight actually follows the latter company’s effort to catch up to its rival in the market. It shows Boeing’s decision to undertake the design and production of the smaller, but much more energy efficient 787, which would also be the world’s first commercial carbon-fiber airliner.
Cool CG graphics that show the inner schematics of the plane (which look even cooler when viewed in 3D) often pop up on (or out of) the screen. Meanwhile, during the company’s efforts to catch up to rival Airbus, we also get to see the flights of some of the classic aeronautical machines, like the Stearman wooden biplane, Super Constellation from Lockheed Martin and the Harrier Jump Jet. It’s all awesome aerial footage that pays off in the finale with the test flight of the Boeing 787, an airplane designed somewhat to resemble one of the most superior birds of flight, the albatross.

As one would expect from a large-format film source (70mm) such as IMAX of recent vintage, the 1080p/24 HD image encoded in AVC/MPEG-4 looks absolutely spectacular in this release from Image Entertainment. In fact, I’d say it looks almost flawless. With the sole exception of sometimes white levels looking a little too blown out, ever so slightly, this is completely clear of any issues whatsoever. Source issues and processing nuisances are a non-starter. For 3D lovers, outside of a few more-difficult passages that bring on some noticeable crosstalk/ghosting, this is also one of the better-looking, most engaging 3D titles in a while from IMAX/Image. There are quite a few CG schematic effects used in the film with lots of pop-out, and there is a strong sense of front-to-back dimensionality straight through the feature. Whether you choose 3D or 2D, you get great detail and vibrant color reproduction.

The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack is equally engaging to match the splendid visual. Robust surround effects engulf you while big, clear narration maintains a solid center up front, with wide stereo panning and spacious dynamics in the entire mix.

Legends of Flight is another excellent IMAX home theatre reference release from the folks at Image Entertainment. It should satisfy 2D and 3D fans alike, fans of flight and aeronautics, or anything that just looks good in high definition.
