The Film

[Rating:4/5]

Reviewing a stand-up routine is always a difficult proposition. People’s senses of humour vary so widely and, me not being a comedian, it is nearly impossible to convey the comedy in an accurate way. With that being said, I’ll only say this, Black seems to be the sort of comedian who people love or hate. It’s not that he’s overtly political in a manner that he strictly takes a side, Left or Right, (even though he has no love for the Tea Party), but he equally bashes Republicans and Democrats and mentions the ongoing debate over abortion. If politics doesn’t get you riled up, Black also tackles iPhones and Droids, Facebook, Apps, and Farmville. He’s edgy, angry, and usually insightful, even if you can’t stand what he’s saying. Personally, I think Black’s form of rage-filled comedy is a non-stop laugh-a-thon, but that’s just me.

In God We Rust was captured in high definition and it looks generally good in this 1080p AVC encodement from Comedy Central. There is good detail and color reproduction with only a small amount of video noise. There are issues with color banding in certain shots, however, that show up in the big red cube that adorns the set behind Lewis Black.

Audio Quality

[Rating:4.5/5]

Two lossless DTS-HD Master Audio (48kHz/24-bit) tracks are offered in 2.0 and 5.1. The 5.1 is the superior of the two as it sounds more life-like, bringing in more of the ambience of the performance space and adding some crowd laughter and applause to the surround channels. Both tracks work just fine, however, by offering clean dialogue.

Supplemental Materials

Most of the extras here offer some more material from Black improvising with the audience on some of the bits from his act. There are also photo galleries.

The supplements:

  • The Walk Out (1.78:1; 1080p/24; 00:02:06)
  • Photo Gallery (1.78:1; 1080p/24; 00:05:02)
  • Audience Participation (1.78:1; 1080p/24; 00:06:50)
  • Promo Shoot Outtakes (1.78:1; 1080p/24; 00:04:52)

The Definitive word

Overall:

[Rating:4/5]

An excellent stand-up routine from Lewis Black that will get under some people’s skin and for others will have them dying with laughter, In God We Rust is A-grade comedy.
