Based on a novel by Alan Glyn, Limitless is a sci-fi action/thriller by director Neil Burger (The Illusionist) It stars Bradley Cooper (The Hangover) as Eddie Morra, a struggling writer who’s been dumped by his girlfriend Lindy. After bumping into his ex-brother-in-law who turns him on to a new designer drug called NZT, Eddie starts taking the little translucent pills that allow him to access 100-percent of his brain. Not only does this finally allow him to finish his novel, but it opens up a whole new world of possibilities. He becomes like the most confident man in the world; suddenly everything he has ever seen, heard, or read is available to him, organized in his memory, and ready for use.
He devises a plan to make a huge amount of money on the stock market and win back the girlfriend who just dumped him. His amazing success in the stock market, making millions in just a few days, garner him the attention of billionaire Carl Van Loon (Robert De Niro), who wants Eddie on his team of advisers to help broker a big merger.
But, Eddie soon realizes that NZT may just be a nightmare and not the dream drug he thought it to be.. With his brother-in-law murdered, people suddenly following and trying to kill him, and unexpected side effects of the drug beginning to present themselves, his life may be in on the line – can the drug help him think his way out of it?
Limitless is full of implausibilities and plot holes while the story seems to fizzle out at the end, but it still offers a rather enjoyable thrill ride nonetheless. If, unlike its protagonist can seem to do, viewers don’t mind turning off their brains for ninety-minutes and just escaping into the fantasy it makes for a fun diversion anchored mainly by Cooper’s charisma and its slick looking production.

This is an excellent looking AVC/MPEG-4 1080p/24 transfer to Blu-ray of Limitless from Fox. Ot arrives looking every bit as crystal clear as one would expect a film of recent vintage to. It’s blacks are downright obsidian, but there are still nicely extended shadow details. A thin layer of grain imparts a film-like veneer while never becoming too obtrusive and overall crispness stays rather sharp. There are only some rare instances, not necessarily a cause of the encodement, where a little roughness can be seen in the picture.
Audio Quality

Limitless‘ DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack isn’t really aggressive, but it is rather ambient and atmospheric in nature, surrounding the listener in a wealth of sound effects that keep soundscape interesting. Dynamic rage is good and highs seem natural overall if leaning a bit towards being overemphasized. Dialogue is clean and lows have a good bit of heft.

This one is somewhat feature-rich, so for the people out there that love their extras, Limitless should shoot right to the top of their lists. Not only do we get both the Theatrical and Unrated editions of the film, but there’s an Alternate Ending included as well. Along the more usual lines there is an audio commentary, interview segment with Bradley Cooper, and a making-of featurette, all in high definition.

While Limitless may not be the smartest thriller ever made it certainly is fun to watch and it offers a lot of home theatre enjoyment in this Blu-ray+Digital Copy package from Fox. It’s a good weekend popcorn flick for sure.
