The Film

[Rating:3/5]

LOL tells the story of Lola (Miley Cyrus; Bolt), a high schooler struggling through the pressures of high school romance and friendship all while trying to dodge her protective mother Anne (Demi Moore). Along the way Lola will discover that her great friend Kyle (Douglas Booth) just may be the long-lost love she’s been searching for. What results is a film that may seem typical and average on paper, but ultimately ends up rising above something you would normally skip outright thanks to a few surprisingly good performances.

Let’s be honest, I had ZERO expectations for this film. The concept, while nothing new, basically sounded like a rip-off of Clueless, minus the classic humor. Imagine my surprise when I actually found myself slightly enjoying LOL, thanks in part to a rather shocking performance by Miley Cyrus and an equally solid job by Demi Moore. Now, the acting isn’t groundbreaking in the slightest sense, but I found the back-and-forth bickering real, kind of something we would actually see in real life. This isn’t a film you need to run out and immediately rent, however, don’t completely dismiss this one as you might actually find something worthwhile here. I definitely did.

Video Quality

[Rating:4.5/5]

Shot using the Red One MX, this 2:40:1 aspect ratio, AVC MPEG-4 encoded transfer is quite impressive. The film’s color palette features a variety of colors, some blacks, some brighter like your blues of the sky or the gold, bronzed tint given to Lola (you know that tanned teen look….right)? I will say that a majority of the sequences hold a fine amount of detail, particularly that of any facial close ups (glance at some of the shots below). It’s during these moments that we see accurate flesh tones, contrast levels (well, maybe this varies from character to character as it seems like all the guys were bland, while all the girls were tanned up), as well as solid detail. Little aspects like textures on the breaking of Kyle’s guitar, or the rug on Lola’s floor. Being shot digitally, there are really no anomalies to speak of. All in all, this is another fine Lionsgate day-and-date effort.

Audio Quality

[Rating:4/5]

Arriving with a DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 track, this track may not sound that impressive at first, however, subtle  tones make this one better than initially expected. Dialogue is well reproduced throughout via the center channel with no real noticeable instance of dropout. Atmosphere is better than initially thought thanks in part to the musical influences found in the film. During the few band performances by ‘No Shampoo’ (seriously…what a name), the crowd can be heard directly behind us bringing home that kind of ‘you’re there’ feeling. LFE, again during the music scenes, offers up a bit of low-end. Pans between rears also were just fine. All in all, I couldn’t really find much to fault here as this track suited the genre well.

The Definitive Word

Overall:

[Rating:3.5/5]

I’ll be honest and easily say that I had ZERO expectations for LOL. So, imagine my surprise that to realize that this film actually has some substance to it. Equally impressive is Lionsgate’s Blu-ray, highlighted by a fine V/A presentation, as well as a few features. Don’t give this one the ‘scoff’ that I had. Be sure to add this one to your rental queue asap, as you might just be shocked at what you discover.
