The Series

This sci-fi fantasy series that runs here on SyFy has made a bit of a splash owing to its undeniably witty one-liners and seething sexuality. Truth be told, when I first began watching Lost Girl during its initial run, I wasn’t convinced. The series begins a bit slowly and quickly starts to become repetitive, but sticking with paid off in the end.
It follows a woman, Bo (Anna Silk) who has superhuman powers and one day discovers she is a succubus who belongs to a world of mythical beings known as Fae when she saves another woman, Kenzie (Ksenia Solo), from an attacker and is tracked down by the Fae after she accidentally kills a human during the rescue. Forced by the two sides of the Fae, the dark and the light, to go through a ceremony in which she must fight to the death and, if she survives, pick a side, Bo, rather than choosing to be light or dark, instead chooses neither side, choosing the world of humans. Thus begins her life of adventure with her now roommate and sidekick Kenzie as they become supernatural detectives of sorts, helping Fae and humans alike solve all sorts of mystical problems. Coming to her aid at all times is the light Fae werewolf-cum-police detective Dyson (Kris Holden-Ried) and his partner Hale (K.C. Collins). Since Bo needs to “feed,” sucking out people’s auras through sexual contact, in order to heal, Dyson becomes her go to guy for healing since it won’t kill him, but a complicated love-triangle develops between Bo, Dyson, and Lauren (Zoie Palmer), a human doctor who also has feelings for Bo that works for the Ash, the leader of the light Fae.
As the first season continues and the relationships flesh out, the series becomes a lot more involving. One has to make it past the first 5 or 6 episodes to get there however. Trick (Richard Howland), the keeper of the series’ light Fae pub becomes a much more crucial character who obviously holds more sway than he is letting on. Meanwhile, the chemistry between Bo and Kenzie is absolutely irresistible. Ksenia Solo as Kenzie is without a doubt the breakout here with her hip one-liners and quirky sense of style.
Lastly, without giving too much away, having already seen the second season, I can only say it only gets much, much better offering far more surprises and character development, so you owe it to yourself to keep up with season one.
Video Quality

Lost Girl is an original high definition production using the Panavision Genesis HD camera with Panavision Primo lenses shot at HDCAM SR (1080p/24) resolution. It arrives on Blu-ray with a strong AVC encodement at 1080p/24. Blacks are black and shadow details are finely nuanced. There is a strong sense of contrast and overall texture and detail is rather sharp. There is some video noise that can be spotted, but it never becomes overwhelming or look too harsh. In all, as one would hope, this is leaps and bounds above broadcasts of the series offering a much cleaner, more well-defined image with no evidence of macroblocking or clipping in white levels.
Audio Quality

The Dolby TrueHD 5.1 (48kHz/24-bit) soundtrack is equally impressive. While it could hardly be considered aggressive in comparison to the best reference releases for theatrical audio mixes, for a television series, the mix is rather engulfing and atmospheric. That is a very good thing given the subject matter here. There is a very fine balance between the front and rear and the surrounds are used well for atmospheric sounds and discrete effects judiciously. The front channels also carry lots of useful directional panning while dialogue is quite clear and mainly in the center.

In spite of a bit of a slow start, Lost Girl offers a steady amount of entertainment that over the course of its first season reveals itself as a true breath of fresh air on television.
