The Pulitzer Prize winning author and screenwriter Horton Foote (To Kill a Mockingbird) was one of the most prolific writers for the stage and screen and his poignant looks into the American experience have shaped cinema and culture for decades. Now, in his final screenplay, Main Street, stage director John Doyle attempts to craft yet another look into the heart of the American experience.
The film is a series of mildly interconnected stories taking place in the small town once home to a thriving tobacco industry, Durham, North Carolina, but now affected by the nation’s economic downturn. The town is disrupted when one of its elder citizens, Georgiana Carr (Ellen Burstyn) rents her father’s old tobacco warehouse to a Gus Leroy (Colin Firth) who it turns out works for a hazardous waste company. Meanwhile, the police officer, Harris Parker (Orlando Bloom) that Georgiana and her spinster niece Willa (Patricia Clarkson) send over to the warehouse to checkup on the activities over there for them is going through his own personally issues. He’s still in love with his high school sweetheart Mary (Amber Tamblyn) who is eager to get out of the town and head for bigger cities like Raleigh or Atlanta.
Main Street is ultimately a dull and dour film with half finished story lines and plodding direction by John Doyle. It’s confused story makes it difficult to know if Main Street is meant to be an indictment of the current economic system, a romance, or simply poignant drama. What I do know is there are lots of solemn faces, a lot of crying, and many questions left unanswered. It is certainly not one of Foote’s better screenplays and perhaps Doyle should stick to the stage.

Main Street comes with a clean AVC/MPEG-4 1080p transfer on Blu-ray that makes its 35mm source almost look like an HD production, with what little grain there is. The image does tend to soften a bit too much, however, but it does have great looking colors and nicely extended shadow details.
Audio Quality

There’s a relatively inconsequential DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 losssless soundtrack included that is dialogue-driven and front-heavy with very little activity in the surround channels and not much low frequency extension. It works for the material at hand, offering clean, intelligible dialogue, but that’s about it.
