SUMMARY

An Irish-American family in a Michigan town rule over the crime the corruption where the prison system is the only industry.

Mayor of Kingstown Season 1 Blu-ray (Paramount)Mayor of Kingstown is a Paramount+ original drama that originally launched in November of 2021. Starring Jeremy Renner, the series follows the McLusky family, the leaders of the small town of Kingstown, Michigan, where the primary industry in the prison industrial complex. When his brother is killed in a robbery, Mike McLusky (Renner) takes over as the de factor “mayor” of Kingstown: the guy who walks the thin line between keeping the peace between the incarcerated, the gangs on the outside, the police officers, and the prison guards. An ex-con himself with ties to the white supremacist gangs due to his time inside the prisons, Mike is a man willing to cross the line, but is pretty much protected by the system given his ties to the police (his brother is on the force) and he is also an FBI informant, as was his late brother before him.

The series tackles issues with systemic racism, corruption, crime, criminal justice, and does it all with a brutal and visceral eye on reality. There is no glossing over the warts or pontification in this series. Renner brilliantly plays anti-hero on par with the best we have seen in modern television history in series such as The Wire, The Sopranos, or Breaking Bad. The final two episodes lay down some of the most brutal episodes you will see on television.

The Video

Mayor of Kingstown comes to Blu-ray in a 1.78:1 AVC 1080p encodement. It has a wonderfully filmic appearance with a strong amount of detail in its desaturated color palette that perfectly captures the look of the Upper Midwest state of Michigan and the poor to lower middle-class township.

The Audio

Mayor of Kingstown comes with the rare lossless Dolby TrueHD 5.1 audio mix on this Blu-ray release. While the sound is clean and dialogue intelligible, and overall, there is good dynamic range, the mix itself doesn’t provide much beyond some ambience in the surrounds and good panning across the front. Even the final two episodes which bring the most action don’t do much more beyond that.

A brilliant crime drama that sets up Paramount+ and Jeremy Renner as serious contenders in the streaming renaissance. Landing on Blu-ray with a reference video transfer, this is highly recommended.
