The Series
[Rating:3.5/5]
For all my love of animation, particularly that of the Disney classics, the works of Pixar, and anime, I somehow never managed to find my way to the Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim segment. So, when I had the opportunity to review this Blu-ray release of Metaocalypse, I was of course thrilled and my curiosity very much piqued; animation and heavy metal, two things that I enjoy (to varying degrees).
For those (like myself) not in the know, Metalocalypse is the Cartoon Network’s successful Adult Swim animated series chronicling the fictional half American/half Norwegian death metal band Dethklok through their onstage and offstage lives. Anything else you need to know is that this is basically an updated version of Spinal Tap. Think of it as Spinal Tap meets Beavis and Butthead. Dethklok is the most successful metal band in the world, they are completely out of touch, and dumb as doornails.
Season Three finds them in the precarious position of having to manage their own finances without the help of ruthless manager/lawyer, losing touch with the”real people” from their fan base and deciding to go back to basics by joining a Dethklok cover band.
The humor is crude, lewd, and in your face. The music rocks, and the animation is slick, sleek, and edgy — so’s the language, by the way. This is definitely not for younger audiences, hence, “Adult Swim.”
Video Quality
[Rating:3.5/5]
Color reproduction is strong and detail is sharp in Metalocalypse’s 1080p VC-1 encoding, but the image does suffer from aliasing throughout, knocking a few marks off its rating.
Audio Quality
[Rating:3.5/5]
Season Three of Metalocalypse comes with a surprisingly thin sounding Dolby TrueHD 5.1 mix that has tizzy sounding high frequencies and utilizes the surround channels sort of haphazardly. Otherwise, dialogue is clean and the soundstage is nice and wide.
