From the Scorpions to UFO to the Michael Schenker Group, German rock guitarist Michael Schenker has been shredding the axe and burning up the charts since he was 15. His signature Gibson Flying V and playing style were even an influence on the late Randy Rhoads. Schenker is still around and still rocking like hurricane, and in 2012 he undertook a tour for his latest album, Temple of Rock. Joining him in this show at the Tilburg, Netherlands concert captured here by Inakustik, are former Scorpions Francis Bucholz on bass and Herman Rarebell on drums. In a 19-track set, Schenker rocks hard, fast, and, with a backing band that still has the chops, shows why he is one of the great rock guitarists who has influenced generations of headbangers. The stage setting is pretty drab, however, and the crowd, well, they’re either too old or too reserved to get into the mood. They hardly cheer or even move during the performance. It makes for a rather strange experience.

A high definition production, Temple of Rock comes with a 1080i/60 AVC/MPEG-4 encodement, although the packaging mislabels it as 1080p/24. For a concert video, the image is more than serviceable, since most people will be more concerned with the sound than the image (see below). Still, the image does have some faults. The generally dark set imparts a murky appearance with heightened video noise. There are also some gradation issues, posterization and combing artifacts that can be spotted.

Like most Inakustik concert discs, Temple of Rock sounds really good, even for a live hard rock performance, which isn’t exactly the best of audiophile genres. A DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 (48kHz/24-bit) and LPCM 2.0 Stereo (48kHz/24-bit) track are provided. Each one offers a good spread of sounds across the front, clear vocals, and a punchy midrange. The 5.1is similar in tone and balance, but extends the spread of sound, offers a little bit more low end, and adds in some performance space atmospherics to the surrounds. If there is one deficit to either option, it is that the two guitars don’t always sound very distinct from one another in the mix and high frequency instruments, particularly cymbals are just a tad tizzy.

Schenker and co. rock just like back in the day in this concert performance from Tilburg. Inakustik’s audio is top notch, with crunching guitars and punchy rhythms, so crank it up, bang your head, and let it roll.
