What can one say about Mutant Girls Squad (戦闘少女 血の鉄仮面伝説, Sentō Shōjo: Chi no Tekkamen Densetsu)? Another entry into this wild sub-genre of Japanese horror/slasher flicks, it is completely outrageous, schizophrenic, and just plain weird. So, basically, if you already love these sorts of “splatterrifc” films, then this one will keep you well entertained.
The story is about a beautiful girl named Rin (Yumi Sugimoto) who discovers on her sixteenth birthday that she isn’t really human, but, rather, a mutant species known as Haruko, can sprout a claw-like hand with a shell like armor, and has superhuman strength. Rin is dragged into an organization with fellow mutant girls like herself by an androgynous leader called Kisaragi (Tak Sakaguchi), who wants the mutants to rise up and wipe out humanity.
The three directors/actors Noboru Iguchi, Yoshihiro Nishimura, and Tak Sakaguchi have stuffed Mutant Girls Squad with copious amounts of action, gore, and over-the-top tongue-in-cheek humor right from the get go. If you can’t get your fill of lopped off heads spurting buckets of blood, girls with chainsaws shooting from their rear ends or swords popping from their breasts and guys being offed by giant squid arms rammed up their keisters from this film, then you must be numb.

Don’t expect much from this low budget affair. The video quality goes from one extreme to the next, with color reproduction, detail, and overall clarity being all over the place. Video noise is often extreme and sometimes nonexistent. Black levels can seem completely washed out. Flesh tones go from pallid to too far into the red. It’s all captured in an AVC/MPEG-4 1080p/24 encodement from Well Go USA that is more likely than not as true as possible to the original source.
Audio Quality

Audio, in a Japanese DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 (48kHz/16-bit) soundtrack is nothing exceptional either. Being somewhat harsh in tonality, jagged around the high end with misused surround channels, the mix is below average for an action film.

It’s zany, it’s wacky, it’s gory – welcome to the wild world of Japanese splatter horror. Mutant Girls Squad qualifies in abundance and if you like films like Tokyo Gore Police, then this should suit you fine.
